Loud Skimmer

I was just wondering if skimmers a loud in general or just mine.

I have a ASM mini in the sump of my tank (30 gallon cube, 20L sump). When I turn the thing off to empty the collection cup the only noise I hear is the gentle hum of the return pump (CA 4000); i don't even hear noise from the overflows (2- 1" durso stand pipes.)

My skimmer makes a lot of rattling and sucking noises, could it just be the pump?

Any rattling and humming is the pump. Mine does that. It's worse when if yours is touching the any of the sides of your tank. Also, make sure you have something under, like the support with suction cups for feet, styrofoam, or some foam padding.

Sucking noises could be either your output plumbing or the venturi hose. I have a "gateless" gate valve mod and a drilled cap on top of the tee much like a durso to lower the noise. And I stuck a small rolled piece of paper towel in my venturi hose in order to lower the noise but still allow air to go in.
