The tank is nominally 100 gallons. I assume i want a turnover rate of about 1000 gal/hr. The sump bottom is 28" below the aquarium.

Recommendations?

I prefer not to spend huge amounts of money if possible but I don't want a rio.

Will it be internal or externally mounted?

I've always had good luch with Magdrives. I'd say a 9.5 or 12.

They can be mounted either way.

You want quiet, reliable, e-efficient, go with an Ehiem.

They are these 3 things, but not cheap.

Thanks. I had pretty much come to that conclusion. OTOH, it is only a factor of 2 more than a rio, and I am sure it would last more than twice as long.

I'm with Louey on the magdrives. Mine have been very reliable and last for years. The prices are also very reasonable.

So how does the noise compare. I am looking at some of the ratings and a number of people comment on the noise from the magdrives.

Also, I have one 1" inside diameter bulkhead. What's the upper limit on return flow? I don't want to overdo it. Should I aim for 1000 gal/hr for a 100 gallon aquarium?

I like my Eheim 1262 for submersible. Europe has a larger one then that, but we don't see it here in the USA.

For external, I am very happy with the noise levels of my Panworld. It is quieter then my Iwakis, even with a fan.

Do you think one of these puppies will be enough? I'm already wondering if I should have got two....

Your 1" overflow will likely not handle two of 1262 but can handle more flow then one. I think one will suffice if you have other forms of water movement in the tank.

Cool, then my stock options should go up. JK

You'll be happy with it. They are solidly made pumps.

What model did you get?
It isn't going to be the only source of flow in the tank, is it?

I got the biggest one. I need to bifurcate the return, so that is why I was wondering about two. I also bought two of their power heads, and if that is not enough, I still have two Hagan's I've had for 7 years rated nominally 400 gph each.
