Wondering if anyone keeps pairs of Centropyges. I am going to attempt a pair of juvies and wonder how they'll do when they grow older. I know their hermphrodites but everything else is a big question mark ;)

Why yes, I kept two flame angels for a while, about a year and a half or so, maybe two years? They were delightful friends and had the most entertaining antics. I will never keep a single centropyge again, if you thought one had personality, a pair has double!!

Especially in the evening when the actinics were on, they would flit around together and dance. The larger one (I assume male) would lightly peck the vent area of the smaller one while they did this and then they would swim off into the rockwork. I always hoped they were spawning but I never saw it. FWIW, they were both the same size when I got them but one grew larger and the other stayed rather smallish. They developed very different "personalities." The male one did get kind of a "bad ass" attitude with the other fish. He was much bolder than the female. He would swim his appointed route through the tank, and flash his fins at anyone in his way. Not very aggressive, just sort of rude. The smaller one never had the slightest interest in the social scene in the tank, she just pecked and grazed through out the day until it was dusk and then they went through the evening dancing before bed. They always got along famously and I did not see any aggression or bullying between them except for a moment or two of fin flashing when I introduced them.

One of them jumped out one day while I had them in an uncovered temporary tank in the basement. We were having carpet put in upstairs thus I had taken the tank down and just stuck them in an extra tank. So that was the end of that. :-(

Thanks Mike. Just got done reading some of their Centropyge info.

One part that caught my eye was the expected life expectancy of Centropyges range from 2-14 years. I swear I've known specimens that lived in captivity for over 15 years though.

I've kept C. argi in pairs and trios. :)
Get a group Len, maybe 5 to 7 if you have the space, and let them work things out...then get rid of the extras.

Laura didn't mention that our pair of flame angels ate SPS polyps. Just something to consider, because we had to do a near complete-tank-tear-down to get them out of the SPS tank.

Yeah, these fish are a heartbreaker IMO. Not worth the risk, imperators are actually much more safe, although not a Centropyge. :?

C. argi on the other hand is golden. 8) C. acanthops too....

I'm hoping mine won't eat corals. I'm going to get very small specimens and let them grow up together. I'll feed heavily to alleviate any coral pecking problems. I hope they pair up.

So far so good with my pair. No coral nipping yet, and no real aggression either. The larger speciment will sometimes chase the little one, but only for very short intervals and always without damage. The small guy doesn't seem to even care, ignoring the bigger angel's aggression for the most part :) I hope they pair up as they grow older.

I suppose asking for a picture of them in your tank would be too much?

Nope, I can snap some pics of them. I've got a bunch of specimen photos in the collector's forum already :) Full tank shots are another story.

It's time to put Len on ignor until he posts current full tank shots.

Everyone join me in boycotting all Len threads. :P

YOu could always get a pair of C. Resplendens, get them to breed, and you'd make some money!

Then you could get a larger tank, not that we'd see full tank shots ever!

I had the same problem. Took a particular liking to my stylophoras.

I never saw my flame or bicolor munch on polyps, but I did notice when I removed them I actually had polyp extension on most the corals.

Here is a look at my pair. I have them in a 300-gallon. No behavior problems to report.
