I have read numerous times that the latest trend in keeping healthy thriving SPS is to work toward a 40x turnover. I have Two CL running about 1500GPH each and my return pushing 6-7 hundred GPH if Im lucky. That gives me exactly a 30x turnover and seems fine but I was wondering how those of you with a 40x turnover are getting it. How many pumps and how many jets?
I have two spray bars underneath and 14 outflows up topside. I feel as if I push any more water through my two CL I will have to much velocity. I dont think my few LPS (frogspawn, Open brain, etc...) can handle much more. Any thoughts?

Tunze's, Vor-Tech's, modified MJ's.

Penductors on the returns.

I think my tank has around 30X's. I would like a few more PH's pointing directly at the bottom of my rock on the back side of the tank, but that is more to make sure nothing settles underneath than for the health of the SPS.

I think 30X is fine for SPS.

Feature Article: Water flow is more important for corals than light. Part 1. Introduction to Gas Exchange
By Jake Adams

Considerations for water flow are almost always secondary to other decisions made when assembling a reef set up when in fact, water flow is paramount to the health and vitality of a reef system.

lets see on my 100g tank, I have a return to a OM that's probably pushing 1000gph (+- 100gph) Seio2600 (2600gph.. although the magnet is cracked so I'm willing to bet it's not moving that much, I'll probably replace it with a modified MJ one of these days), Seio 1500 (1500gph) if everything was flowing good then that's 51x the turnover. The problem with larger tanks is that closed loops really can't do much for you unless you had some of those massive return pumps.

I will have better than 50x once my tank is done. Main return with eductors and 2 tunze 6200's.

I've heard that penductors increase velocity by about 10x. Does this count as increased turnover?

It actually increases the flow by 3 - 5 times, depending on your pump. And yes it counts in your total flow.

It's not "turned over" as in through the sump, but that doesn't matter. Flow is what you want. Not turnover.

Thanks. I'll have to pick up a couple for at least my returns then. By simply adding two to my returns and getting 3x more out of them it increases me from 30x to 42.5x in the flow dept. Nice...

I got 25x in the 120 tank that I seting up. I guess after all the plumbing and loss of head, my 1750 turns into 1500 GPH according to head loss calculator on RC.

As of right now, my nozzels feel like pool jets. Like I am not kidding you, I will not be able to hit direct flow on my corals. It would likely rip the flesh off of them.

So I think a penductor is out for me.

I am thinking about putting a tunze wave box in the tank. Do you think it would be overkill according to the setup I have now? Its going to be mostly SPS, so I figured I need the flow.

pwj1286, You may have enough velocity form your returns and CL to give your SPS all the flow they want and need. I have the OM supersquirt version 3 with two spray bars and then 6 loc line returns running 1500GPH. Basicaly three loc lines and a spray bar running at any given time. The other CL has a constant 8 3/4" pvc outlets at 1500GPH. My return pump is a mag 1200 split between my fuge and return. Long story short. Alot of flow not a lot of velocity. If you dont have 6 or 8 outlets on your CL you may not need the extra flow depending on your aquasaping etc. I have a couple dead spots that are cyano trouble spots. Maybe you should wait and see how it goes with your set up before spending $$ on the wave box. Think of the other goodies you could get with the money you may save.
