I'll be moving my corals to another tank for this evening while I replace the substrate. The tank to which I will be moving is a much smaller 10g tank that I set up last week with tank water and LR from my big tank. Temp.. and salinity are exactly the same.. is there anything else I should be concerned about??

Stressing the corals even more than they are already.... I would just move the light up and see if that is your culprit and avoid stressing your corals if you dont have to. JMO

well.. as of this morning everything looks to be in good shape ::) didnt break anything.. and I believe stress was held to a minimum.

I got the new substrate in...and the aquascaping in place (dont know if I like it or not though).

Also raised my 400w DE 14k up to 17 inches over the tank. Yesterday I noticed my corals actually looked much brighter for some reason with the light high. If I put it lower they look duller and kinda washed out.

We shall see!

Thanks for asking! YOu're great!

Raising the light also dropped my temp to 76 as opposed to 82-4!!!

Made a huge difference.
Well, that makes sense, doesn't it? :D

At 17", and without a canopy, how much light is escaping the "tank perimeter", Brandon?

a good bit more light escapes, BUT my tank is only 24X24 so coverage with 400w isnt an issue. Like I said, it is noticibly less intense, but I think it still may be plenty of light for my tank.

The reason I ask is that I'm debating on whether to use one of the 400W halides I have (as a pendant) on a 3 foot 50G tank I'm going to attach to my current 75G OR to sell it/trade it for a 250W.

I want to go with no canopy on this one to help with the temp and I also might consider a clam (which I would want a open top for). But with the 400W, I'd probably have to set it a good distance up from the tank (probably somewhere around 16-18" like yours now) but I'm not sure if that would let too much light into the room itself. I know there would be enough light getting into the tank itself but I don't know how it would affect the tank viewing experience itself, if that makes sense. If I go this route, I suppose I would have to make the pendant pretty deep. (maybe 8" or so..) :?

I haven't finnished it yet with this setup.. but whenever I hang a pendant I always make a 3 sided (front and 2 sides) canopy that is open on the top. This REALLY helps with the light escaping into the room, and it keeps the back and top open for heat exchange.

When I get done with the one that I'm making I'll post a pic for you.
