I see this was touched on in an earlier post and I am sure someone out there has been in this situation and posted this before but here it goes agian. I am ready to move from my 10 year old 75 gallon reef to a approximately 300 gallon or more reef. It will be a major under taking, the first problem to come to mind in the early planning is "will the floor support the weight of an aquarium this large?".

I live in a 1898 victorian home with floor joist about every 18". These are thick, true 2 by 12". My current tank sits running with the floor joist instead of the preferred across them. I already have some supports under it now but nothing major.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of load limits I am looking at here, and if this is even possible?

If so how much or what kind of support should I be looking at?

Thanks JB

If you must run them parallel to the joists, you will definitely want to reinforce them by adding supporting pillars and preferably sistering each joists. 18" spacing is great as is the 2 x 12s, but three or four of these joists supporting easily 1 1/2 tons, probably more then 2 tons .... well, that's asking a lot of these limited quantity of joists. I don't know how to calculate the numbers, but judging by what my contractor told me when he did my floor work, you definitely want to reinforce your flooring with your size tank.

What he said.... but he is right. Reinforce with concrete and wood under the house. That is a lotta weight! Good luck.
