My apartment has old wiring, with only 2-prong outlets. There is no third, round grounding plug in any of the sockets. Also, I live on the 6th floor so running a wire outside and down to ground isn't really an option.

Can a GFCI be installed if there's no ground available?

Yes you can. FYI if you have access to ANY cold water pipes (even ones coming from a sink) you can make a ground from there.

A ground fault is detected when fewer electrons return than go out (adjust this heuristic for AC). So it trips if some current goes through your arm, heart, leg, etc. This does not require grounding to function. However, you should also ground your tank, so if you can put a titanium ground probe (or bike spoke) into your tank, attach a wire leading to a METAL pipe or electrical conduit. That way the GFCI will trip before you complete the circuit with your arm, heart, and leg, which is probably preferable.

Depending on how old your wiring is, the box itself might be grounded.

put a meter on the hot leg then put the other lead on the box iteslf. see if it's grounded.
