Just went to an out of town fish store and picked this puppy up.

Was listed as a Mycedium, but it reminds me of the Echinopora lamellosa I used to have? I thought Mycedium had smoother flesh.

The photo does not do it justice, the glass was dirty and I didn't set up the tripod, but I wanted to get a photo up to see what folks thought it was.

Either way, I think it's pretty cool. It was very inexpensive and I think it is just lovely. Shame the colors in the photo don't look as vivid as they do in the tank!

Looks like Echinopora to me also - mycedium have more regular spacing on the corallites if I'm not mistaken.

I think mycedium corallites are all supposed to radiate from the centre (certainly more regular than this) and have a quite distinct nose shape. I think you're right, this isn't mycedium.

As to what it actually is, I'll leave that for others.

Echinophyllia aspera?

Yup.

Nice one, too. Been seeing a few of that general coloration show up with online vendors for the past couple of months.

Echinophyllia aspera

Thank all, I just did some google searches with that name and feel that totally what it is. I feel like we got it for a steal! It was 59 dollars, and it is a quite large specimen. I can't hardly buy a small bubble coral for that price around here.

The guys at the fish store didn't seem to be sure about what it was.

FWIW, it's in the bottom third of a 120 under 14k 250 W HQI bulbs. We weren't sure where to put it.

Hey Laura, does your colony send out sweeper tentacles at night. I'm having a really hard time trying to figure out which chalices do and don't. I hate waking up to a half dead SPS coral next to a new chalice frag I introduced ;)

Good bet would to say all send sweepers. I haven't found one yet that doesn't. IMO the more you have, the more they tend to send out sweepers. I probably have 30 different morphs, and all send sweepers now :(

I looked early this morning, which is late at night for the tank, and didn't see any sweepers, however we have given it a large coral free zone around it just to be safe.

It did have a major sweeper fit several hours after it was put in the tank, and was putting off a lot of mucous too. It was a nice warning of what it would be capable of.

Here is a current photo of this coral. I still can't quite capture how vivid the pink areas are. It is very pretty and seems to be thriving.

Awesome, Laura. I also can't capture the pinks on some of my Echinophyllias either; I have one that is a gorgeous cotton candy pink with blue edges, but photos make it look gray :P
