On Filtration

All of my friends who have fish tanks whether they are FOWLR or reefs, comment on how I run no filtration other than my skimmer. Does anyone else run naked? No filter socks, filter floss, bio balls, wet dry, canister, bio wheel, bio bale, nothing. Anyone? Or am I doing something wrong? I get good growth, not great, but decent, and I get amazing colors that most people can't match with frags of the same coral. Would I get better growth if I had some kind of filtration? Just curious as to how you have your tanks. Ever doubt yourself for no real reason lol?

I run as naked as you.

When I 'storm' the tank (I run bb and storming is easier than siphoning detritius) I will put a filter sock on the drains in the sump, or sometimes run a canister filter to help suck it out. Either of those things only stays on the system for a day or two.

Other than a skimmer, LR and activated carbon in a sock every other week I ran nekkid too Ranger, and liked it thata way

You know, there are people who run totally NUDE now. NO SKIMMER! I know most of us are skimmer die HARDs (no pun on the nude-hard thing, I capped it for the slow) but it really is a fad that some are swearing by now. Really!

Well, if you think about it (in my case), skimmer, carbon, live rock, fuge, clean up crew, and water changes are all part of my 'filtration.'

I too, run in the nude. How many people do you know that really like to use a sock? Its just an extra step in the scheme of things. :lol:

I do however run carbon 24/7 if that counts for extra filtration.

I was just reffering to no mechanical filtration. We all have LR and most have DSB and a sump that provide for filtration, but alot of folks use canisters or wet dry filters. I was catching some flak from other reefers around here who were shocked when I told them how I ran.

FWIW, I'm sandy. ...I like the sand creatures, so I'm torn between the idea. I love the Nassarius snails, cucumbers, worms, and other stuff. I do think my tank suffers are a result though, and runs a bit dirty.

Just skimmer + live rock + lots of circulation for me. I will use a micron bag or syphon hose to periodically capture loose detritus from "storming" as Thales mentioned but that's about it...

Skimmer, LR and a couple of maxi jets.

I do have a hang on back whisper, devoid of anything except a small peice of LR. I use it to dose b-ionic, or drop a sock of carbon once in a while. It also makes a great small fuge, and increases surface flow as it breaks it up very well.

I also use it to feed the frozen cubes of Mysis or other cubes, as it works great for releasing the defrosting cube a little at a a time.

I run nude too, except for some AC some time, most filters are just nitrate factories if not cleaned often, and who wants to be cleaning things.

I still end up cleaning my skimmer once a month, but yea, it is far less than a media filter type unit.
