But now this is my problem,

my bakpak came with a Rio 600 and it ceased up after i took the tank apart and now that i set it up again it i had toget a new maxi-jet 1200 but it doesn't have a bubble setting, any suggestions so my protien skimmer actually skims?

I actually chucked my rio 600 when I got my CPR and put a MJ 1200 on there so that it would be more effective. Worked great. Just need to adjust your collection cup to find the sweet spot. No real adjusting neccesary until it was broken in, then as the MJ got a little dirty I had to adjust the air intake.

Missed the last part sorry. There is a tube and a nozzel fitting that comes with the CPR that goes right on the MJ. Little cone shaped nozzel with a tube in the middle that goes on the intake.

You need the venturi kit for the MJ. Otherwise, it just pump water around, and don't make any bubble. I think it is about $10 or so, but you will have a much better pump when it is modified.

You may need to use some vinyl tubing to get them to connect. Sometimes, I have to put one vinyl tubing inside another to make two different sized pipe to connect to each other.

the connector to the bakpak and the powerhead do not fit, anyone have any suggestions?

The Maxijet1200 should fit snuggly into the black tube on the input. Do not use the original RIO venturi kit (grey) of which CRP uses to connect the pump to the BakBak input. In other words, do not use any fittings to onnect the two :)

So, can you fit the MJ1200 directly into the intake tube of the BakPak? And therefore, chuck the grey small tube with the air intake (recirulating one) and the double air intake that goes on the RIO and use the MJs venturi only?

Hope that makes sense. I just scored a BakPak and I'm looking to change out the pump too. ;)

Yea, so I put this on my rock holding tank yesterday and up till now, no skimmate. With the RIO on there, there seems to be very little amount of bubbles being created (def. not enough to make it up the neck) at least in comparisson with other skimmers I've seen. The lower part of the cone is below water line.

Am I doing something wrong? I had it running for about 20 hours in vinegar water and then cleaned it out good before I started running it. Should I give it more time to break in? There are no fish in that tank yet but about 170 pounds of rock. I figured something would be pulled out. :?

I still gotta change the RIO for the MJ to see if it makes a difference. Waiting for someone to answer my last question and the bronchitis to go away for a little bit. ;)

Yes, the MJ1200 fits snuggly into the black tube. You chuck the Rio rejuvinating venturi part and buy the MJ Venturi kit. It looks like a strained with a little nub for the airline. It fits right into the intake of the MJ.

I've found far greater performance with using the MJ over the RIO and far less cleaning to do with the MJ venturi kit. You can even do the "bio ball needle wheel mod" to the MJ if you want a needle wheel BakPak. I've done it, it works great. Problem is mine seem to sheer back off after a while (few months) and having to super glue them to get your skimmer wokring simply sucks. I'm back to using the straight MJ w/ MJ venturi now.

So, you can't just use the venturi that comes with the MJ? Could you just drill a hole in the output nozzle of the MJ and glue a piece of tubing in there? Or where would I purchase the venturi kit from? :)

And Gresh, do you use any of the other stuff that can be added to the bakpak? Like the surface skimmer or one of the bubble traps?

TIA

When it was used as a HOT I used both the surface skimmer and bubble trap. Both seemed to wrork good.

You could rig your own venturi for the MJ that would still work better then what is supplied by MJ. I think CPR even has some detailed instructions on their site. If not, email them, they're VERY nice poeple and will help you for sure.

I got mine from Salty Critter (great customer service and great livestock to boot)
