Apparently thus far, 50% of those polled says they don't do water changes. I'm rather shocked. Most of what I read on the bulletin boards suggest people do water changes regularly, or at least they advocate it (maybe they don't do it themselves). Anyone here never - or virtually never - do water changes?

When I look at that poll I have to believe in my heart that those votes are 100% sarcasm. 8O

Does dumping a bag of fishes into the tank with the water they are in, and spilling some water while cleaning the skimmer count as water change?

If your water parameters are fine, algae is under control, do you need to change water? My fish load is fairly low in a 90gal. I'm on week 8 should I keep going? I top off about 13gal a week.

Trace minerals that we dont test for are mostly likely being depleted (iodine for the shrimps to molt for instance) or even building up for that matter. Also, WC's help get rid of stuff the skimmer misses. I was getting lax with my WC's for a few months (10% mo.) and my corals werent looking quite so perfect. Since changing near 90Gs last month my colonies have better polyp extension, are more colorful and seem to be growing at their normal rate.

I think one reason for these early results is that those of us who do not do water changes are more likely to respond. Whereas those that do water changes are less likely to respond.

So the initial results are probably skewed.

Plus the actual question was not "I never do water changes" but rather "what's a water change". Inviting humerous responses and responses from people who actually don't know what a water changes is.

The fact there is more than one person on the internet who does not do water changes should not be all that much of a surprise.

I see how the last choice in the poll might invite humerous responses. I've reworded the last selection. Let's see if the numbers shift dramatically.

I don't think people who do water changes are less likely to respond. I don't see any logic behind that rationale.

after being away for some time, the poll was the first thing to catch my attention. when i saw the results, it bothered me, as well. then i wondered if people were just trying to be "funny". hopefully not at the expense of those dear little beasties.

There are certainly some people out there who run very successful reef tanks who don't do water changes. They seem to definitely be in the minority, and most of them don't seem to preach what they practice and warn other hobbiests against following their example. No water changes definitely sounds like a ticking time bomb to me.
In other words, I tend to agree that most of the responses for no water changes were sarcastic. I ignored those results anyway, since that's not a road I ever plan to go down.

The "regularly" part is what nabs me... I try to do 25% every month or so, however I don't keep a schedule or anything so for all I know it's less frequently, although I did just do one :)

I do a 30 gal every 2 weeks with RC, I alway notice a positive change in my corals and shrooms in a day or two after!!!!!!!! I only supplement with Kalk and C balance. Turbo boost if I need to raise calc.

I change mine once a month, or so. I really dont know how I answered on the poll, but I dont consider once a month as frequent.
