I have a question about my new and first chiller. It's a 1/2hp Hailea running on a 150 gallon system.

My question has to do with how often it turns on and off, and how long it runs when on.

It now turns on about 3-4 times an hour. Each time it's on it runs for about 5 minutes. (This is an improvement over when I first installed it using too small a pump.)

Does this kind of cycle sound correct? It seems to me it would be more efficient to turn on less frequently but for longer durations. But like I said, it's my first chiller so I really don't know what I'm talking about.

BTW, it is running in a room that averages about 85F. And the chiller is doing its job keeping the water at a steady 80F

Thanks!

You're in Taiwan where it is hot and humid, so I suspect your chiller will turn on very frequently. A cycle of every 5 minutes is quite frequent (mine comes on every 15 minutes or so), but seems reasonable for your ambient conditions.

Sounds totally normal John. Since the chiller can't maintain a true constant temp, despite your setting it at one, it's turning on and off to maintain the temperatures within the tolerances of the thermostat. Longer duration run times with longer off times would put the max/min temps outside the limits of what the thermostat considers a "constant temp". Make sense?
