Help Lowering Salinity

Mechanical Filtration - Eheim 2215 With Water Polishing Media and Carbon.


Current Salanity 1.28 Target 1.23-1.24


I'm thinking to Extract 10 Gallons of Salt Water and replace with fresh Ro/DI water Slowly. VIA Dripfrom a airline Tubing into the Sump..

please Help.

If you don't have live creatures you don't have to go that slowly. Take out 5 gallons and then add few cup fulls at the time until you reach the desired level. and then just top off with right salinity water.

How did this happen anyways?

MY Hydrometer was screwed up. It was a bobbing one. One that you drop in the water and watch the water level. The paper in the sealed tube had shifted significantly. I'm so pissed. It was stressing my Nemo's

i would rather have a salinity of 28 than 23, just take a gallon out and refill with R.O....then in a couple days do the same. i wouldn't worry about it too much. and i'd purchase a refractometer if i was you. i have 2 swing arm hydrometers, one reads .21 and the other reads .26

But I think it was stressing my clown fish. After lowering the salanity my little Zoo's are fully open and pretty. I also filled my canister media with some stuff to polish the water nicely. The result is crystal clear water that made my girl go wow... they rare like swimming in air! the lower salinity seems to be making everything a lot more active and stuff. I still have my Nemo in Qurantine and hes doing ok.

I know you mentioned that to me before but a quick check with the LFS that I do the majority of purchases from revealed that their tanks are all around the 1.22-1.25 stage and continually hover there. I think my little tank raised nemo that came from there was a little hurt by the higher salinity. That + I think another petco nemo I had developed ich I removed him and treated him but i think since these two hung around each other alot they might have infected each other. No other fish in the tank shows signs of it or any stress. They all look incredibly healthy active and eager to eat and stuff. The little nemo though isnt eating so good. I'm a little scared ;_;.

i don't think you can take an animal out of the ocean, subject him to lower salinity for a while, and then expect him to "get used to it" or "like it better". i think that if you take a fish out of .25 seawater and plop him in a little glass prison, the least you can do is try to make him more comfortable, and adjust your salinity to that of his native habitat.

im gonna leave it at 1.024 right now and monitor everyone in there. If they hurt or anything I'll raise it slightly. to the 1.025 and let it hover there.. In the mean time MY little nemo seems a bit more active. I'll keep monitoring him. On the flip side my issue with Diatom has seemed to be eradicated.
