I just bought a Hagen HOB filter for a 70 gallon tank but mine is only 20 gallons. I plan on turning this into a refugium for my saltwater tank but I want to use my current Penguin 150, for a 20 gallon, on my 10 gallon freshwater. How do I sterilize a filter? is it possible?

Just wash it to get the salt/dirt out, and you should be good to go. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything in the pad that can harms your freshwater setup.

Don't see much reason to worry about it but if you do, you can use a bleach solution to wash the plastic parts and simply replace the filter pad. Just be sure to use bleach without perfume or soap in it. Rinse it well and let it stand dry for a day or so to make the the chlorine has off gassed and it should be fine. If you are a super worrier ;) you can rinse it in a bucket of water treated with dechlorinater.

I have swapped from fresh to salt before no problems, I just washed it out and left the biowheel off.
