this is a random event:

something keeps spooking my foxface. it's not the sailfin this time. he will be swimming around, then all of a sudden go hide, spines fully extended, and he loses all of his yellow coloring. the sailfin was way over on the other side of the tank just now, when it happened again. it was happening all last night as well....... and as soon as he feels better, he swims back out.....
i don't see how anything large enough could have hitched into the tank. i added two new pieces of live rock, (but they were inspected thoroughly), and some small hermits and snails. maybe 2 dozen in total. and most were snails..... everything else came from my old tank....

he eats well.
he swims well.
and he looks vibrant yellow.
he's just a chicken......

Yeah that's a defensive mechanism, they camouflage so they don't stick out like a sore thumb... then the spines flick up so if you touch them... you get a sore thumb :D

It might be you that spooks him too. Give it time, once they get confident they tend to roam like kings, but every night they'll go hide and do the same thing :D
