My fixture on the reef was purchased used. It's a Current 130-watt PC fixture, and the fan has been loud from day one. Any ideas on how to fix that? Does it just need to be cleaned?

Peace,

Chip

Probably just salt build up on the fan blades. One of my ballasts for a MH fixture got really noisy so I pulled it apart and cleaned it. There was a bunch of really hard salt build up on the blades.

If cleaning doesn't cut it, it's probably bearings or brushes. - Either way at that point its effectively shot and you'll need to replace it.

If it doesn't have an easy to replace connector looks like you've got some wiring to do.. - Just make sure whatever you do for it at that point is sealed up and insulated well.. - My last dual 175w fixture was starting to slowly short and was lightly arcing against the metal enclosure. 8O -- Enough of that and it could have ignited.

Most of these fan are cheapo from China or Taiwan, and mass produced, not balanced, and the light manufactor picked them due to the cost, not specification or quietness. You may want to get some quality fan and replace it if it is excessively loud.

don't mess around with trying to clean it. Just replace it. Those current fixtures are cheap anyhow. I bet they're not using the best components.
