This will be long and for most to read I posted it on the General Reef Forums, after laying in bed and could not fall asleep with this in my mind and getting it off my chest. Reef Central for what ever reason was off line for a few days, some said it crashed, some said it was hacked, some said it was bad info on there part to let you know the site was down for updating. What as I read on various post on reef sites today was the sadness, the support for them, and the REALLY SHAMEFULLY post about the "gladness" of there problem. I have been in this hobby now 3 years, and if I would have known about there site or any of these prior to it I would have learned so much by other peoples mistakes. I go to RC, RS, Reefs.org and Salt city Reef. many members are on some or all of them and I know there other sites. What APPLAUD me today on some sites where post from people who where glad for Reef Centrals problem or DEMISE. How selfish, Dr. Randy Holmes Farly who is one of the masters in this hobby on water chemistry and how to make so many inexpensive chemical additives for a reef tank for us is on that forum and wrote so many articles on this to teach us all! BillyBeau1 at his own expense has tested so many salts and chemical test kits to verify there accuracies. They choose to stay on RC, Boomer which is here and on other forums to pass on his and there knowledge. Shame on those on the forums that posted that for some reason that they where glad of RC's site problems, I heard forum jealousy, forum member size jealousy, that RC Moderators were to strict and removed them, which they did me after I was inappropriate, gave me a second chance and I abused it and I have been banned, but my fault. There are many other dedicated members on all of these forums with there area of expertise, I am not tiring to slight en you by not mentioning your names, but I was so disgusted with what I read on forums about the happiness of some that RC's info archives maybe lost and they maybe "out of business". For all Noobies reading this, don't let this bit of politics about different Forums discourage you from going to them and I encourage to spend the $35-50 a year to be a contributing member, not just reading on your favorite site, which I encourage also if you do not have the money, but all of these forums need money to be here and can not always depend on Sponsors for it. Now, there was no one that I read at RDO that had negitive remarks towards RC.

I think having a range of different sites devoted to the hobby helps keep it healthy and keeps a dynamic flow of information going. Glad to hear personally that RC is OK. I'll still spend most of my time here, but I like to visit there once in a while.

And it is that stifling of flow that puts a hair across so many asses. Are people allowed to cross-reference or link to other sites? I believe that violates their TOU/UA (though I wouldn't know, the site proved far too restrictive for me so I never enjoyed using it).

On one hand, I completely see your point. On the other hand, I think they've earned no small degree of the ire against them.

Most important in my mind, though, is that the information held within the site is not lost. Because it's really about information (and friendships I'm supposing) and that's lost then the whole ball of wax is lost.

(blinks) I really don't understand why the above rant was posted here. I've read all the responses to the various threads on this board and have no problem with anything that any of our members posted. Free speech and all

How is this shame on us? Where on RDO did any of this happen?
Your post makes it seem like RDO had a big gloaty party because of the idea RC may have been gone, however, that doesn't seem to be the case. In that light, your post seems to be doing essentially what you are admonishing others for doing.
If you edit your post to make it clear what you are talking about, I will edit my quoting of your post. At the very least, please edit the title of the post so it isn't misleading.
Or we could simply make this thread go away.

I understand you may be upset that others were acting crudely, but perhaps you need to talk to the actual people who were. As I said, after reviewing the threads here on RDO, I don't see what you were talking about happening here.

Thules,
no shame at Reefs, org, I was triing to say that is in fact we lost RC or at worst the info thay have it would be a lose to this hobby. I am sorry if my rant came across as blame of negitive post about RC here, it was on another forum, and I accidently after readings Len's thread about RC thought some where from here also. :D

I suggest you edit your rant to make it clear what you are talking abou.
At the very least, add the info right at the beginning that it came from another site.
I would also suggest removing the ad in your post encouraging people to leave RDO and pay to post on RC.

I would be sincerely disheartened to lose such a huge database of reefkeeping information in a blink of an eye. My jaw dropped when I heard the news.

I definitely starting making business decisions based on the event; it's my job to. But at no time did I celebrate their reported demise nor gloated over it. I know RC has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way over the years (yes, myself included), but the amount of information there is undeniable and I would never celebrate over the loss of this information.

You do bring up a good point: any community is only as good as its members. RC itself really doesn't offer anything special; fact is, it is the one of the least feature-rich communities I know. So speaking for myself only, when I'm thankful for RC, I'm really thankful to its members who make the place what it is (contrary to what their staff may want to believe). Information on the internet always tends to pool, so people go where other people/info are. Obviously, I would love to have hobbyists using our resource more. ;)

I was not my intent to have people leave RDO, nor was it a solicitaion for RC. It was a solicitation for members at any Rorum they use to finacial support it.
I am sorry if it was misunderstood.

There’s nothing wrong with trying to run your business. I know when the other toy stores around my store had short comings I took advantage and tried to capitalize. I think if there was people making up qoutes and such then thats foul play. Putting a simple while RC is gone RDO, or w/e reefboard site is happy to have you is good for both the site and for people like me that use RDO the most and like increased traffic. I don't see anything wrong with advertising your business or taking advantage of an opertunity. JMO

We would appreciate the donations, that's for sure :) We run on a super shoe-string budget, and the economy has effected us significantly. Unlike RC, we actually pay A HUGE amount of money (easily our largest expense) for professional articles in our magazine. Webhosting costs really isn't all that much in relation to ad revenue, so I'm sure they're not hurting for money (yes, it's just a guess). I know some of their staff gets paid from RC. Everyone on our staff does what we do pro bono. I haven't seen a cent in ages ... ALL the money goes into providing members better services and expert magazine content. If any community needs donations, it's our's :P But we aren't willing (yet :P) to cripple our resources and make members pay extra for basic services like searching a forum ;)

That statement was to get members to finacial support there Forum, not for the Forums to" charge them" for the Forums services.

It is magical how it always works once you pay lol.

You guys don't have any sort of button that allows a quick pay pal donation, atleast that I have seen.

I do not think that a donation button would be a bad idea, as long as it never changes the usage of the site like RC's did. I, personally, would would donate to RDO. Your site is my original BB home and is always my first place to go when I jump on line. RC has it's uses, but is not personable at all and some posts are buried in minutes. I always prefer this site...it's like living in a small town and everybody knows eachother. RC was like travelling to NYC everyday and always meeting new people, sometimes they had something beneficial to add, but usually things just seemed to fly by. JMO.

Long live RDO!

I'll see about adding a button. We have one in the magazine but not one for reefs.org. It wasn't really necessary years before since we had enough site sponsors to support our operations. But as the economy is hitting vendors, it's hitting us as well, so donations would be welcomed relief.

Thanks guys for the show of support. I'm hopeful we'll grow as as a community (with help from everyone) but we will never lose our "grass roots" small community feel. I love how everyone here knows everyone.

Hows this for class. I just heard from one of my members thats also(was) a member of RC and they were just banned for the comment they made on the reef builders "blog". That comment was " agreed Chris" WTF? They hadn't even made a single post on RC since before this mess. So what is reef builders turning over IP's to RC or is RC just banning people that commented in those threads?

Also a bunch of ass kissing and sucking up to RC by the "blogs" that were pushing this thing in the first place. Get some balls people, you said it. Lets all bow down to the great RC now  please dont hurt me
