Hi everyone. I want to try and make my tank very quiet. What are some quiet skimmers and return pumps? Thanks.

Any submersible pump will be much quieter, but if you need external, Askoll based pumps like Red Dragon and ATB Flowmaster are going to be the quietest. They do cost more money (in the case of Red Dragon, A LOT more money).

Vertex skimmers are said to be near silent.

The Iwaki pumps with Japanese motors and NO cooling fans are also very quiet. I think that is only the MD20 and MD30 though - so not much to choose from.

Cheers

Len,

Does this hold true for all Vertex skimmers, or just the Royal Exclusiv made ones?

Bump for an answer from Len, if he's finished stroking his new Alpha 200 and purring.

All Vertex brand are made by RE though? You mean cone skimmers?

Most cone skimmers are quieter. ATB's are pretty damn near silent. My Warner Marine K2 is really quiet as well.

Well, there are the RE made cone skimmers like Len has bought, which as I understand are made by RE at Vertex commission and look like this:

...and the much cheaper and straight-forward looking Vertex skimmers like these (Gen II Vertex Internal Pinwheel Skimmer 180).

, which nonetheless appear to have great write ups. I kind of suspect that the silent running thing is down to the RE manufacturing, but maybe it's a Vertex thing, I'm not sure. Interesting to hear your comment that you think cone skimmers are quieter in general though. I hadn't heard that.

Oh, and I'm guessing the Red Dragon pumps might be one of the biggest factors.

Sorry. Missed this post :) It only holds true for the RE ones. It's the combination of the RD pump and the how the skimmer components are isolated to reduce vibration.

Anything with the Askoll-based pump (ATB, Vertex Alpha, Bubble Kings) will be pretty quiet.

Thanks Len. I might just have to start a thread asking for opinions about the non-alpha Vertex skimmers, as they look to be excellent value given the reviews they get on the Premium Aquatics website. It got 5 out of 5 from 4 people for a $199 skimmer rated for 60-100g tanks. :)

Don't own one myself but I know a half dozen that do and they love them. Quiet, "cheap" and effective is what they say. I know a few LFS around here have switched over to them for their installs and don;t regret doing it one bit. The price point is good for them and their customers couldn't be happier with the skimmer. I'll try to get one to comment for you :)
