潮目の海「黒潮」水槽にてバショウカジキ2尾の展示を始めました。
このバショウカジキは9月12日に紀伊半島沖の定置網で採集したものを運んできたもので、体長約80㎝の幼魚です。
At the Shiome Sea "Kuroshio"
[Black Current - the name of an ocean current off the coast of Japan - the Shiome Sea is where it meets the Oyashio (Kurile) Current] aquarium, we have started to exhibit two Atlantic Sailfish. These Sailfish are young fish, 80cm long, collected on the 12th of September in a fixed shore net off the Kii Peninsular .
大きな背びれが特徴です
A large dorsal fin is its characteristic feature.
バショウカジキはカジキ類の中では比較的沿岸に寄る習性があり、夏から秋に南日本の定置網に入ることがあります。
カジキの仲間は水族館で展示するには非常に困難な生物です。
外洋で暮らすカジキは高速で遊泳するため、捕獲するのが困難な上、輸送も難しく、生きたまま水槽内に入れることすら難しい魚です。
Among sailfish species, the Atlantic Sailfish is one with a habit of coming into relatively coastal waters and, from summer to autumn, is sometimes found in fixed shore nets off the coast of southern Japan. The sailfish family is particularly difficult to put on display in public aquariums. In addition to the fact that the open sea-dwelling sailfish is difficult to catch because of the speed at which it swims, it is difficult to transport and even getting one into an aquarium alive is difficult.
アクアマリンふくしまではカジキ類の飼育に以前から取り組んでおり、昨年は予備水槽にて13日間の飼育を行うことができました。
Aquamarine Fuukushima
[the name of the public aquarium, with an added "u" to confuse the word censor :roll: ] has previously grappled with raising Sailfish, last year having managed to keep one alive for 13 days.
今回は何時、定置網にはいるかわからないバショウカジキのために大型トラックを待機させておきました。
運良く状態の良い個体が採集できたため、すぐに輸送し9月13日の夜間にアクアマリンふくしまに到着、すぐさま大水槽に搬入しました。
This time, as we did not know if a Sailfish would enter the fixed shore net, we had a big truck on standby. Fortunately, it was collected in good condition, transported quickly and arrived at Aquamarine Fuukushima in the middle of the night of the 13th of September. It was quickly transferred to the large aquarium.
水槽に入れたバショウカジキはガラスにぶつかるのではないかと心配しましたが、ゆったりと落ち着いて泳いでいました。しかし、時々他の魚に追いかけられたりして我々をドキドキさせてくれました。
We were concerned that the Atlantic Sailfish would crash into the glass of the aquarium, but it calmly and quietly swam around. However, it made our hearts leap into our mouths
[lit. it made our hearts go "doki-doki"] when we
saw it sometimes chased other fish.
観察していると、水槽内のイワシを追う行動が見られ、搬入した当日からイワシを食べているのを確認できました。
We were able to see that it was chasing the sardines in the aquarium and eating them from day one through observation.

飼育が非常に難しい魚ですので、水族館で展示するのは世界初のことかもしれません。
状態良く搬入したとはいえ、定置網による網のスレや輸送によるストレスも大きかったはずです。

As it such a difficult fish to feed, this might be the first time it has been displayed in a public aquarium. Although we can say it was introduced in good condition, it might have suffered stress from the move and been damaged by the net. Please, take a look at the sight of a healthy Atlantic Sailfish.
