Try moving the wet side a little around to adjust it. It might not be aligned properly.
At 15 ft away, I would hear a slight hum when on max, and only if the room is dead silent like in the middle of the night.
At lower speeds, the sound gets more quiet ofcourse.
My fan is louder then it when the lights are on so I don't notice the hum sound, instead I hear the fans

yes it is new. just 24 hours old. I have a half inch thick glass, so i removed the spacer altogether. The motor is just sitting against the glass. You are right on the propeller sound. That is a more accurate description. Although i cant hear through the glass and water, i put my ear next to the motor and there is definitely noise from there.

gally, there are 2 rubber spacers that come with the unit. it is not the large rubber spacer that comes on the motor, but a very thin black and very thin orange spacer that are about 1/16th thick. This is what you should use on the inside and out.

Then begin the allignment process - also, with glass that thick, you should use the cable mount that came with it so that the unit vibration doesn't rotate the dry end.

Hope that helps and good luck.

EcoTech Marine VorTech Propellor Pump Noise

This is definitely going to sound a bit redundant based on the previous post but I though I would give me opinion concerning your issue. The pump is devised of two side: the wet side (which as you may have already guessed goes into your Aquarium) and the dry side (who would have thought, this is the side that is on the outside of your Aquarium). You may was to investigate both sides of your pump to eliminate the cause of the noise. Try these steps listed below which should help you discover the culprit.
  1. Remove the pump in its entirety from your Aquarium and dry the pump off. Then assemble the pump outside of the water: wet side then rubber spacer then dry side. Turn on the pump and see if you hear any noise as described in your post. You should he the motor turn when holding it near your ear but it shouldn't be loud. If this happens you most likely have a faulty pump and should contact the retailer were you purchased the pump about a replacement.
  2. Esnure that the bolts on the dry side are firmly secured but not tight enough to keep the wet site from turning. Please note that that manually turning the propeller on the wet side by hand does normally feel as though their is some resistance to it. Also inspect the Large metal circle for any sign of scraping or tear. This could indicate an issue with the wet side of your pump.
  3. Ensure that the appropriate glass thickness setting is used for your aquarium. If not remove the rubber cap and then align the proper width for your aquarium. Be careful not to run the alaignment pins inside since this can cause your pump to not function. Also use the rubber circle on the outside of your Aquarium between the glass and the dry side. This will ensure that vibration against the glass is at a minimum and also ensures that your VorTech does not loose alaingment.
  4. Once your sure where you are going to keep your VorTech positioned us the little Tie Strap and double sided tape contraption. This will ensure that your VorTech does not become uncoupled and allow the dry side to fall to the floor and also provides some stability in maintaining the proper aliangment of the VorTech.
  5. If all else fails return the VorTech and order a Tunze :)
