Separate...the GFO requires a low flow rate to function properly (just the top 1/2 to 3/4" should move -- kind looks like it's boiling). It it moves too much it will break apart and that is not good.

Carbon can be run at a higher flow rate.
Can't mix the 2 as the carbon will break apart the GFO.
Two seperate reactors, can be daisy chained together (and run off the same pump) with the carbon one being first in line.

plus there are posts once a month about all the questions we've seen today from you malibu. Think its time to start using the search feature and looking through the massive amount of posts we have. MR's been around long enough that our search database has enough info to answer any question you need to be answered. You'll also see the vast number of posts just like yours dated every two weeks asking the same question.

Im not trying to be mean or anything, just recommending a different way tog et your answers. And it will be quicker and youll get a more in depth answer as the first time around people like to explain and give Pedro (my hero) style posts. =0)

I run both in the same reactor aswell. I put the carbon in first, since it floats, and the GFO second. When the unit is running it goes through the GFO first, the the carbon last. Im using the ROX. 08 carbon, and the GFO pellets from bulk reef supply.

I understand to start the pressure low on the GFO so it tumbles but what about the carbon setting do I pack the reactor and run hight pressure through it? with no tumbleing? Thanks Sal

naw i run decent flow through mine and difference gfo will take diff flow, but with my vodka dosing thinking of taking both off line anyways, btw i have done it both ways running 2 reactors and never noticed a difference in my tank

It can be done, and both can be run at the same flow, same container, ect. Just remember that the flow requirements set are due to size/shape of grain and its ability to absorb the materials in the water due to its shape, size, and their molecular abilities to absorb things in different flow conditions. That info along with the fact that GFO tends to tumble in the container due to smaller grain and break apart if put through too much tumbling, releasing dust into the tank and maybe leach the Po4 back in to the water.

so, yes you can put them both in the same container and under the same flow. Your getting more out of the products if put under their correct flow requirements, that beeing separate containers with different pumps running their correct flows. They are just not running at optimal useage, and can cause your GFO to last a week or two rather than a 30 day period you would get under optimal. Same with the carbon.
