my mantis story.

My first diving trip was in the Caymans when I was 13.
I brought a 2 gallon tank to set up while I was there with
things I caught from the reef. The first day I went snorkeling off the beach and
caught a few little damsels and a really cool looking shrimp
I was really excited to have all my little critters in my vacation nano tank.
Paradise did not last long. The next day I checked the tank and all the fish
had disappeared, only the shrimp was left. I was pretty sure the maids did not
remove my fish, so I blamed the shrimp, which upon closer examination looked
really mean. I took the shrimp back to the beach and let him go. He was probably very happy at that point having a huge meal basically handed to him. the rest of the trip I collected just fish.
From what I remember the shrimp was pretty big, so it must have been a full grown mean and nasty mantis.

i got a mantis shrimp in one of my tanks...he is fine just make sure it is acrylic..he can break a glass aquarium relativly easy..they are intresting to watch..there are two types smashers and spearers... like their names imply, one smashes the other one spears... As long as they have a cave, they are okay to be near coral. Just don't put them with shrimp or any crabs unless you want them to be gone.. He is a peacock mantis..and is every color of the rainbow..pretty wild looking..anyway good luck..

I really like my mantis. But, the problem is you can't keep any inverts in the same tank. Therefore, no clean up crew, which does present a problem in terms of algae.

NEVER I REPEAT NEVER PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE TANK WITH A MANTIS SHRIMP...some have the power of a .22 calibur bullet...you must net the shrimp first...then put him in a holding area..then you can use your hands..just be smart around it and it will be okay.
