did you test the water for amonia and nitrites?
have you been testing?
how long has the tank been set up?
could it be the tank is just now cycling again, you've been putting a bunch of new things in there right?

do a water change?

I would be really surprised if one snail death was able to take out your tank
like that. I had a batch of snails die in my tank, like fifty at once. I never saw anything negative from that.

One snail dying in a healthy tank shouldn't cause those problems. What size tank and how many hermits are in there? Once that snail died, the hermits should rip it to shreds.

Copperbands are difficult fish to acclimate and keep, especially when you yourself didn't know if it was eating.

Dean has an excellent point.
In my case when I noticed a snail not moving I would take the shell out, and it was always empty. so something was eating the dead snails. I guess if I had fifty rotting snails my tank might have crashed as well.

...i hear ya'LL... but it was fine until then, don't know how many days it's beeN theR. the sludge i scooP'd out was over 2 tbsps. unfortunately i do not have enuF crabs or snails in there, but have 2 stars. while waiting for my Aqua C, am using a prizm which all of a sudden started puLLing out major dark sludge. i have about 40lbs of rock and about 25lbs of sand. :irked:

Here's your problem in a nutshell: not enough crabs, LR, LS and skimming power. That is the formula for disaster in a reef tank.
