0 Iodine in my reef tank: Could this be the problem with my corals

I posted a thread recently where I was frustrated with easy corals (shrooms, colts, leathers) not opening up and all my tests came back normal. Today I brought it to WWOF and the guys really helped me out and tested my tank water and RODI. Everything was fine AMM 0, nitrate, trite, ph fine, salinity, everything. RODI had 0 on TDS. The only thing that was odd was my Iodine was 0. And the employee found this really odd and said this could have something to do with corals not opening up and loss of some corals.

I do 10% weekly WC's with instant ocean salt and started dosing ESV 2 part, so something is removing a lot of Iodine. My skimmer is a OCT 160 (properly suited for tank, 125), however I have a lot of macroalgae. COuld this be draining all the Iodine. My other thought is I added alot of Marco rock some 5 months ago. Could this be soaking up Iodine.

So for know im dosing Iodine at recommended dose aswell doing a big 20% WC

Any thoughts are appreciated

Macro algae loves iodine for sure. It is very common for people to add iodine to tanks that grow macro algae to increase the rate of growth and the health of the algae.

Iodine depletion may very well be your problem. Mushrooms and soft corals like iodine additions too.

If you're aggressive with running carbon, that could also be adding your problem.

Frustrating isn't it?I have a 110 gal fish tank with mushrooms and a lot of algae in my sump.Maybe it's the high nutrients but my mushrooms are doing very well i just started adding iodine once a week.I notice that some iodine products get used up very quckly.I use to add B-Ionic iodine to my reef in the morning by evening it's gone maybe it's because i have a giant colt coral i don't know.Be carefull with iodine an over dose can be detrimental.The ph could be the problem remember that ph peaks hours after the light comes on.You might get a normal reading at midday and an outrageous reading in the evening or after you feed your animals.

Im going to cut my chaeto in half, and continue to add the Iodine untill I get it to sea water levels (.05-.06) than tyr and keep track.

As for carbon, I dont even use it, just chemi-pure elite.

Stupid thought, but I have a cpl Anemones (1 large carpet, long-tentacle, and bubble tip) doing really well, could they be depleating Iodine? I had a UV on it, could it be that?

As I stated earlier, could all the Marco rock, that was unestablished be soaking up nutrients?

Either way, Im goin to dose and test and see the results and post them

I would not cut your Cheato in half if you think it is responsible for other positive water quality issues like low PO4. Just supplement the iodine slowly and see how things respond. The Marco rock is not likely relevant here. The anemones like any other living organisms are contributing to nutrient and trace element uptake. Still the Chaeto is by far the biggest nutrient hog-- and that is why we use it.

Chemi-pur elite performs the same basic function as carbon and may remove some iodine, but not enough to worry about.
