I think you are better off using AC all the time, keep you cool while the tank gets cool too. However, your electric bill will be much higher comparing to a proper size chiller placed outside of the room\house the tank is in.

Not the same a chiller would give you a more consistent temperature.
also a big factor is how many pumps and light you'll have over the tank or tanks.
example: if you keep the room at 75 degrees and with your lights and pumps it gets raised 10 then that's not going to work to well.
It's not always a simple answer since everyone tank size, room size, ventilation system, Pumps and lights are different.
A proper chiller is always the safer (but more expensive) option.

Multiple tanks = mutiple chillers = $$$$$. The easiest way to keep the tank cool is to keep the ambient room temp cool. In the summer time you would have the AC running anyway for the bulldog.

Other factors that contribute are ofcourse lighting. Get good fans to keep the water surface cool.

Another contributor are pumps. Quite often people "overplumb" the return creating more head pressure which results in the pump having to work hardxer therefore creating more heat. 90 degree elbows etc are comon causes for this.

I just try to limit the causes of heat and along with the AC it worked out just fine for me in the summer months.

If however you have multiple tanks that using a comon sump then a strong chiller would be the way to go. But even in this case you will need to limit the heat contributing factors in the tank.

Another issue to consider is the heat generated by the chiller if it is in the same room. Some of the heat taken out of the water is going right back in via the hotter room air.

Thank's exactly why I ran with the AC this summer.
I figured if I gonna pay a high electric bill, I might as well enjoy it & stay cool too..
