I'll brown out my tank if it really works.. I just want to see how well it works.. I'm more than confident that I'll get the tank to come back if the dosing takes a while..
I ned to know if the dosing can be speeded up and dnreef seems to be the only person that has tried this or says so..

tobin i dont think u can speed up the dosing since u will be to build up the bacteria which eat the vodka so if u speed it up and there is nothin to eat up the vodka i think it will be bad new for your tank

I tried dosing with Vodka. As my current tank was going through different cycles I had outbreaks of algae. I started with 2ml per day and added 1ml per day until the algae started to clear. I have 90 gallons in my system. I got to the point where I was dosing 6ml per day and my water got very clear. This is where I started to have problems. My coraline algae started to die back and my monti caps started to bleach. I backed off the dosing for a few weeks and started again using the same procedure. I've done this 3 times now and every time I notice the coraline start to turn white I now I've reached the dosing limit. I've decided to try different ways to keep the nutrient level down. I'm afraid of damaging my SPS frags. I wouldn't say I'm against the vodka dosing nor that I wouldn't try it again. If it wheren't for the SPS I would probably continue this strategy since it really gets the water crystal clear. I would suggest taking it slow until you get a sense of your tipping point.

You started at 2ml in the beginning and you made it up to 6? Over the course of how long? Sorry to hijack the thread Tobin ... but I am so curious ... I started at 1.0ML in the first day on a full system that is just shy of 120G ... Did you kill your entire tank in the end? Not trying to be a d0uche about this ... After reading the articles on vodka dosing ... it would take quite a bit of time to reach 6ml per day on a 90G tank ... I don't even think you would need that much. Which articles did you read that told you to start at 2ml per day?

I don't understand this???

You had such great success with the magical denitrifier and you decided to add vodka to crash your tank? :Yikes:

What kind of food are you using? I can't believe 5 cubes a day for a week is going to raise PO4 by .2 in 400 gallon of pristine water.

Tobin always fiddling around with something lol. i think you upset the balance you achieved when you removed your reactor so your tank now needs to re-establish itself.
from what i read about carbon dosing, it works but it takes weeks to build up the bacteria needed to consume NO3 and PO4. i would get started with the GFO if you want to continue carbon dosing and bring the PO4 down to a more manageable level.

I've been dosing my tank for a while. The results are breathtaking once you hit the sweet spot. Truly, fishes look like they're floating on air in your tank. :) I think dnreef is right, it's possible to dose faster. But I believe with larger tanks only. 1 extra mil per day might be a bit much in my opinion, maybe every other day until you see the trates and phos drop.

You are "on a whole other level bro" and have beautiful sps that you never take pictures of...And you never take full tank shots. 10+ years of experience but you were FOWLR and just starting to get into reefing when you joined MR a couple years ago. I still remember when you sold off all you non-reef safe fish so you could try SPS. It wasn't that long ago.

I'm sorry to call you out but you love to talk yourself up and frankly I'm not impressed. Check your pride at the door and take note of the advice given to you by some of the reefers who truly are on a "whole other level bro" and you might see some improvement.

hey

I started dosing .5 ml on my 75 gallon moved up .5 every week to the point where I reached 2.0ml and crystal clear water with hair algae, Cyano and a yellow sand bed...lol....after 4 weeks of dosing not too happy I stoped dosing and bought Microbacter7 (good bacteria) and thing look like they are falling back into place I will try dosing vodka again with Microbacter to see if I get a better result.

dnreef you have not researched vodka usage. your coraline was bleaching and pilling off, because coraline doesnt like the light much. Since vodka makes water clear, light penatrates water much better, thus coraline its just turning whiite. Look underneath or on the side, you should still have plenty growing.

bob i suggest you research it better before pouring vodka like that. its great nutrient control, just takes research, time and patience.

I did research this issue, but nothing teaches quite like experience and I'm one of those that likes to play around with things. If you'd like I could give you a dissertation on my experience but I chose to paraphrase my experience. It became clear that the improved water clarity might allow for better light penetration and it seems from my experience in the hobby that coraline prefers the less well lit areas in my tank. My real point with this is that if your not careful with this process you could put some of your corals at risk. I also should have mentioned that the skimmer will go nuts once you start this.

exactly. i didnt mean to pick on you.
the whole point is to take it slow and follow directions.

oh im sorry, how could i ever pick on almighty bob, founder and creator of magical seagrass...

dump all the vodka you want and post your results. if you are on another level you would not be asking such questions and actually follow your reads

I've read all there is to read on it and still don't have the answers to my questions.. I'm not a newbie please don't tell me to read... As most of the questions I have asked on 2 forums with experienced reefers Don't have answers.. I'm on a whole other level bro.. I need to know if the dosage can be raised faster than the weekly chart being that I probably have these bacteria in my system from methanol dosage from my denitrifier.. My skimmer is more good enough..
Vodka is just another trial and error thing for me.. But I do think this will lead to my first tank crash in 10+ years...

I used to dose vodka on a regular basis but it made it impossible to drive anywhere so I stopped.

The reads can't answer my questions that's why I'm asking to see if anyone know's through trial and error.. anyway I got my question answered by Randy Holmes- Farley.. To let everyone else know thw answer, the answer is yes you can up the dosage to that of a later week on the chart.. You will risk making too much bacteria and it starving to death creating the same problem as before..
So I don't reccommend jumping the dosage.. I already had this bacteria that the vodka produces from my denitrifier in my system from the use of methanol..
In conclusion to this question of can you move up the dosage safely yes as long as your monitoring levels and have access to a %50 water change as soon as a bacterial bloom is noticed, I mean same day within a couple hours of noticing at most..

New development on the vodka.. i jumped to 6.2 today this is the 3rd day.. Phosphates are still the same at 0.20 which does mean the in the 3 days I've been dosing, something is happenning from 0.28 to 0.20..
I will also incorperate some Lanthanum chloride for the phosphates some time next weekend.. Lanthanum is more commonly used in spas for phosphate removal that I will be diluting 30% to 70% RODI water.. I got these measurements from TMZ on RC.. Since this persons total water volume is close to mines.. Dosing it at 4.5ml a shot.. I won't be dosing this daily as it is supposed to bring phosphates down 0.01 a dosing.. This stuff is also cheap at $10 for a 32oz. bottle,30 to 70 dilution you do the math... We'll see..
