Has anyone ever started a thread about the users of Manhattan Reefs? Considering how many friends I have made, how many great people are here and that we all share the same hobby I would be curious to know a little about everyone...
I'll start:
My name is Alfredo De La Fe and my wife and I live in upper Manhattan. I own two businesses- A telecommunications/data business that sells, services and installs telephone systems and networks and a business that sells Ancient Coins (Look at my Avitar!). The telecom business used to be fantastic, but 9/11 changed that in a big way.
I have had aquariums since I was 5 years old and salt water since I was about 12. (I am 32 now) I started my first Reef Aquarium about 10 years ago. (A 55 Gallon acrylic aquarium I bought second hand) When I "upgraded" jobs I also upgraded my system and put together a 180 Gallon reeftank. (I would have set up a larger one if it were not for the fear of the tank crashing through my floor one evening while I slept!)
My facination with aquatic life is not limited to aquariums. My wife and I are both Scuba divers and enjoy traveling when we can. On a recent trip to Hawaii I had the pleasure of a personal tour by Charles Delbeek of the Waikiki aquarium. If you every go to Hawaii DO NOT miss going to this aquarium. By far the highlight of my trip.
I was very fortunate to meet some of the pioneers in our hobby when I joined the Brooklyn Aquarium Society. If you have not done so, you really should make a point of going to BAS meetings. They meet the first Friday of every month at the New York Aquarium for Wildlife Conservation (At least they used to, it has been a while since I was able to go!) Speakers such as Charles Delbeek, Julian Sprung, Bruce Carlson, Craig Bingman and many of the other "gurus" of our hobby have given fantastic lectures for BAS.
I recently got my father to sign up for this site, he can tell you a bit about himself as well...
What about YOU?
Regards,
-Alfred
