Hello. I am thinking of fragging my green carpet anemone. It has been very happy since I purchased it a few weeks ago. It hasn't moved once from the orginal spot I placed it. It eats wel, I feed it silversides. It has a baby attached to it; it has had it attached for weeks now (bought it from Ed, nightcrawler like that). Has anyone had success with fragging their anemones? I may frag him into 4 pieces.

You can frag an anemone- If you feel ok doing that. BUT you only got it a few weeks ago and you want to frag it already? Jumpin the gun a little if you ask me well jumping it A LOT actually. It takes a while for it to even completely settle in, and your gonna stress the crap out of it--- Just because some ignorant person frags an anemone on youtube doesnt mean is good to do. Unless you have a good reason to frag it I wouldnt put it though all that after only being in its new environment for a few weeks. My RBTA has been in my tank for just shy of 3 months and Im just happy its healthy, but it stayed in one place for 2 + months and moved the day after the swap. Either way good luck with what you decide to do.

AND YOU WANT TO FRAG HIM INTO 4 PIECES? I've seen the vid of them fragging a nem into halves but not 4 pieces. Kind of a foolish thing to do to an anemone youve had for a matter of weeks. JMO.

i always heard that for many people that have tried it that when you cut them apart you stand a good chance of loosing one of the halves, and im sure it makes it even worse if you cut it in 4... i would hate to see you loose the whole thing..

post pics and update us if you go thru with it..

If you read the link he posted you'll realize there is a lot of good reasons to frag it.

I say do some more research, keep the carpet happy for a few more months and go for it. I wouldn't go for 4 cuts unless u meant splitting the mother and splitting the baby in the future

It is 12 inches, although he usually doesn't extend that large because of the flow. I would like to have two, one for each side of the tank with my clown pairs. According to the poster on that thread I posted, you can create 1,000 new anemones a year from a single, healthy anemone. I mean, that is A LOT, but it seems healthy rather than taking them from the ocean. Ok, off topic here lol

Hey jonny I read the link but didnt have to get past the first post on it.

Anemone propagation
hello friends
As im sure many of you are aware ,the majority of ornamental anemone species are in great need of captive propagation!
the collection of anemones for the ornamental trade is in no way sustainable and wild populations will take hundreds of years to recover from even mild harvesting

I will show you how simple and effective anemone propagation is and urge anyone with the space and time to try this! please

firstly your stock must be healthy ,well fed and stress free sor several months ,This is very important for success

iv decided to use a common carpet anemone (stichodactyla) for this demonstration
firstly you eill need

His second comment Jcolon should have read- must be healthy and STRESS FREE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS--- it just went through a tank transfer a matter of weeks ago- a few weeks by Jcolons account. Thats not stress free for months as well as if its his first nem he should concentrate on keeping it healthy and alive before worrying about propogating it. I never said he shouldnt if the time comes but said he was jumping the gun- which he is even by the post that seemed to turn him on to fraggin the nem. So for at least a few months he should just be happy to be proud owner of a healthy anemone. Again JMO.

J, I read through your link, and the one thing that jumped out at me more then once is that the guy recommends the anemone be "healthy, eating, and stress free for at least 4 months" Also, they recommend that if your are new to keeping anemone your should not attempt this. Familiarize your self with the care of anemones first. So that you may recognize the signs of an anemone in trouble.

I want to see a pic of your nem!!!:) Please

I agree with what Jimmy has posted here, it would be a bad idea for the reasons stated.

If it is dropping a baby, why not just wait?
..and what is the point of cutting it into 4 pieces if you only wanted a 2nd one?

Did you read this part of the thread?
i agree id say the anemone must be in good health for at least 4 months before propogating

and this even more importantly?
please dont forget to rinse the anemone in a basin of tank waer after cutting it, this is very important as it release toxins under extreme stress that WILL wipe out yor system

He had a propagation system to put the anenome in to heal, you don't, so you will be taking quite a chance with your entire reef.

Just food for thought :)

Nature

If you are all about being natural, then why are you even in saltwater? It isn't natural too pluck living creatures from their environment and stick them in a cube. So, to say "cut yourself in half" as a means of inducing empathy in ineffective. If you are concerned about them why even have an aquarium. Aquariums aren't part of "mother nature." Yes, it may seem cruel however' fragging anemonies will prevent future specimens from being plucked from their natural habitat.
If you want two go and purchase anotherone.
I am looking for healthy giganteas.
I would never cut try to force mother nature .
CUT YOUR SELF IN 1/2 HA HA
