Hey guys :) Both me and a friend of mine have a problem with a Brownish/red substance afflicting my Yellow Polyps and his Duncan colony. His Duncans are a very nice piece and among his more prized specimens. My Yellows Polyps have just 3-4 amongst a colony of around 30 that are closed and coated with this stuff. This happened before with a Yellow Polyp colony and wiped out quite a few. Back then I thought it was just a Cyano bloom, but now i think its some kinda disease.

What i did back then was try to remove the stuff gently with a soft bristle brush and turkey baster to suck/blow it off. But never had much luck. This time we're gonna try QT'n them and treating it somehow as well as trying to remove what slime we can.

Does anyone know how to cure these things? I thought Iodine was something that helps tissue heal, I have Lugol's solution.. if I added some drops to the QT tank would it help? I also have a product made by Brightwell that claims to help coral tissue heal with amino acids n what not. Maybe Ill try that in the QT too. Anything else we can do to save these animals?

thanks in advance,

-Jay

"As far as I understand it... brown jelly is caused first from trauma to the tissue of the coral. Either from a fish/invert or from handling. Once the tissue injury is there, the infection results when/if tiny little protozoans can get to it before the damage heals. Once the protozoan infects, it can spread quickly and digest the tissue. The protozoans also excrete some sort of digestive enzyme, which is why the jelly can spread to other parts of the coral, or other corals, and damage those as well.

Remedies... I've heard simply taking it out and brushing off the jelly may work, some people do FW dips or lugols dips as well.

Preventative maintence... don't have coral nippers in your tank and secure all corals well so they don't fall or get bumped into?"

Anthony thanks a million for that post. The article was great.. learned alot from it and im going to follow his suggestions for treating it. My man Albert is one experienced and knowledgeable dude, I trust is products as much as Tropic Marin's. In fact the only supplementation Ive used over these two years of reefing is his Coral Vital and his Sand Booster. With both Ive seen great results. Other than that I just use a montly dose of Iron/Mang for all the macro in my fuge. Thats it. Along with the Ca reactor and regular water changes with Pro Reef the system as been thriving for a good 4 months straight. Theres just been that one problem with the brown jelly on the Yellow Polyps. In this case its only on a couple, Im going to remove em from the tank so it doesnt spread and i dunno, maybe QT em and try to treat em.

The question was really for my friend who's Duncans went from looking great one day, to have this junk all over it 3-4 days later. We're not sure what exactly happened but he'll do his best to treat it. Hooked 'im up with my Lugols n other possible helper supplements ive accumulated over the years and wished 'im GL.

Ill post back in a few days and update the outcome if anyone should be interested.

thanks again,

-Jay
