can someone lead me in the right direction for different types of pumps.im looking into a mag 9.5 for my new 92 but is there a better pump out there external or internal that has similar gph.i know alot on fish and coral but putting everything together for the first time by myself gets a bit confusing.so many options on sump designs and pumps and skimmers its a bit overwhelming

the mag is a pretty good pump i ran the mag18 for 2 years with no problems i only switched it because i went with an external dart witch i love .you can check out the reeflo snapper for an external pump for internal eheim's are expensive but well worth the money you also didn't mention how big is your sump

Well there's alot to consider. IMO I prefer external. No heat issues and my tanks temp is more stable compared to running internal pumps. Some internal pumps can eventually go bad. Some people have reported leaching from the magnets and the stainless steal screws that rust from the pumps aswell.(quick fix though.. silicone on the screw heads). Calcium also builds up on then eventually causing them to stop working. Downside for external... none so far except having to buy heaters for the winter months. Look into a(n) Iwaki WMD model pump. They are pressure rated. Unlike the WMDX which is for circulation only. Blue Line is good. Good pressure rated pump. With these pumps you can even Tee off to run other items. JMO

Internal pumps:
Marineland Euro Utility Pumps (similar to Mag's, but quieter, less heat, less electric) We prefer these Euro Utility Pumps over the Mag's every day of the week.

Eheim (another good pump, but more expensive than the Euro Utility Pumps for the same result, IMO)

Mag Drives (too much heat transfer, more electric use than the above pumps)

Overall, I'd go with the Marineland Euro Utility Pump.

FYI, external pumps do leak, have seals go bad, can be loud, require a lot more room for the pump itself and then the plumbing.
