From what I read and understand is it is better to use less and change it more often. It works for me to run less and change every week.

i use a cup for my 55g with 10g sump. how much do u use

I use just a cup for my 220. That's all I need if changing once a week. I bet a 1/2 cup in your 55 would be plenty if you change once a week.
