does anyone have the branching+encrusting type of green star polyps, and maybe a picture of what it looks like when allowed to mature in your tank from some time? i previously had the regular type of green star polyps forming a "carpet" wall all around the back and sides of my tank, and a "lawn" of it on sections of the bottom. however i just sold the tank and i'm starting over. was wondering how the encrusting type of green star polyps grow, (more branching?) the care differences (much more difficult?) and if the scientific name for both types (different genus/species??)

thanks in advance....

I've never heard of or seen branching GSP.
It will encrust on dead acro skeleton or Tonga branch rock giving the impression of a branching variety.

i have two or three types of gsp. All of them encrusts to some point. 2 of them have a tan base and when closed its smooth, but one extends really long while the other extends shorter. Also i have a 3rd type that has a purple base and when closed its spikey and extends soemwhere inbetween the other two. I care for all of them the same, but cant help you with the names. hope that helps

noodleman, the tan based smooth polyps are not gsp, that is a type of gorgonian. very similar, but also different :D

Bingo!! The Briareum genus resembles star polyps and is often confused as such by vendors and aquarists. It is also known as Corky Sea Fingers:

It looks light purply :icon16:

i had this coral back sometime in 1995 or so, bought from Ace Aquarium (closed now) on Northern off Main, for around $60, the guy named Larry (where does he work now? he seemed really into reefs, but i lost track of him after he left the new store that opened up across the street), who had sold it to me back then as the branching form of GSP. it started off tan green with pale lavender base but a few months under 20K MH it was looking just like green star polyps and started forming branches, then it died /melted away.

that is gsp, and i see some that is closed and not smooth. the description for gsp is

"This is an encrusting type coral that has bright green polyps or occasionally light brown or gray. It has a large bright center to each polyp and when the polyps are retracted there are dark purple, tubular calcyes left projecting above the mat."
