I have a 5" sand bed consisting of Caribsea seafloor special grade arganite. It is turning into a solid mass on the bottom of the tank. I have been using a stick to break it up. Anyone know what is going on? Could it from the biopellets? When I do a water change I usually vacuume the top 1 inch. Cant do that now.

Johanna,

We never recommend using the seaflor special grade by itself - it's aragonite which is calcium carbonate heavy and has a tendency to bind if not stirred correctly by inverts for the first 6 months or so. ESPECIALLY if you start adding calcium and alkalinity or have a calcium reactor - this typically accelerates the binding.

I would say the following:

Get some animals to stir it up regularly and stop adding 2 part or doing water changes with higher concentrated calcium salts (Reef Crystals, Oceanic, ESV or the like)

Hope that helps,

House

I do dose 2 part. Do you think if I mix in a finer grade of sand it will stop binding together? I just started to notice it about two weeks ago. The tank has been running for 6 months now.
