My 29 Gallon

Well, I finally decided it was time to buy a stand. I have been having problems finding one for cheap so i went to fishtown today, and they have the 29 gallon black pine aga stands for $105.99, so I went ahead and got it. Now watch everyone and their mother will sell one

now i am just waiting for my brother in law to bring the tank down from the third floor so i can start to set it up. I am going to build a crude support for my halide untill I have time to build something really nice. i want to build a pine canopy to match the stand which should not be too hard. pretty much all my coral will be switched over. I am leaving some of it in the 36 gallon for my husband, he likes xenia and shrooms. i am just deciding on if i should go bare bottom or just add enough sand for looks. decisions decisions

I plan on taking this tank a little slower than my 36, but naturally i am an impatient person, so we will see

i want to develop some sort of under rock pvc support with holes drilled in it for circulation from a small air pump that will be hidden by the rocks, and i want to get my rocks set up the way i like them before adding corals. so i will be moving my clown fish over, does anyone have any recommendations for another fish? my clown is a butt head so it has to be able to defend itself

i may get rid of the clown though

Wow I didn't think a pine stand for a 29gal would cost that much.

Damn i just threw out my 16th century victorian cherry wood stand, it fit my 20L poifect.

yeah marrone, they are. petland wanted $135.00. i did not want to go with metal cuz i like all the crap to be contained in the bottom. i was looking on ebay and locally through other sites for one but of course i was not that lucky.

It would have probably been cheapier to fine an old dress or cabinet at say the Salvation Army and take out the draws. It would probably have been stronger and made of better wood. For my 260gal the stand and canop, which are solid oak, cost $750 each so I guess it's not that far of a strench of a $105 for a 29gal stand. I wonder what the cost would be if some one was to build it from stratch, anyone out there that builds their own stand and canop can comment on cost.

yeah marone, actually it is the solid pine wood, not that press board crap. i did the stand calculator on the diy thread, and it would have cost more than that to build it and finish it, so i guess it was worth it. i just have to build the canopy which i am now thinking is going to be simple instead of matching the stand. i will still make it nice. i need to get the tank cleaned out, it was housing goldfish, so it is pretty dirty. then i am going to move most of the rock over from my 36, and let it cycle for a bit. if i do sand it will most likely be less than 1/2" still not sure if i want to do that though. i may go to home depot tomorrow and check out the pvc

so, i have made some progress. today i went to lowes and bought some spray paint for the back of my tank. i can honestly say that nobody will probably ever have the same background paint as i do. i bought some glitter spray paint, it is blue with blue, purple, silver, and pink glitter in it. they are small specks and the way it reflects light is so neat. i backed it with a pale purple color to block any light going through. turned out great, and mr is the first to see the results

first coat on, you can see how sheer the paint is, thats why i used a backing color, so here is a close-up after the second coat

backing color painted, more purple than the pic shows though, even though you can't tell from the front, i could have used this color alone, i like it

and it is so hard to capture the sparkle, but here is the finished product looking through with a small light, can't wait to put the halide over it and watch it sparkle

It will be interesting to see if when you put on the lights if you'll see little sparks.

when i walk by it without light i see sparkles, but since this was a spray paint, it is very small specs, it reminds me of the blue glitter on the bass boat we had when i was a kid in florida. i really like it, and hope it looks as good with the halides over it, might test it in a bit, scared to incase i don't like it

oh haha i got the stand already, thats why i am making progress now lol thanks for the offer though. o but how big is the canopy? LxWxH ? maybe i could chop it, is it wood or press board?

The stand and canopy are made from solid pine and stained in cherry, not sure if you are handy but I think you can solvage a lot from it if you have the proper tools and time.
