Usually heaters don't crap out in a year.I have a 150w ebo jager going on 10 years that works perfect. If you want redundancy go with 2 smaller heaters. The risk is not really with a heater failing since corals can tolerate lower temps, the risk is when they stick in the on position and boil your tank, or when glass heater become exposed they can crack.

I understand this, I guess I will just keep my current heater than. Just didn't wait it to ever get stuck on the on position. The price of a heater isn't going to break me, so figured it was a good idea. Maybe I'll wait it out a little longer.

You can use something like a reef keeper lite for $100 or maybe in an older ranco controller. You can find these things used for $50 or $75. I actually like the reefkeeper lite. I know the expenses of the hobby can be a burden. Good luck either way :)
