Paul,

I envy you. You did it. My wife gets mad at me when I tell her I can't wait to hit 55 and retire. I pray to God that I make it there with all limbs and sense intact. 23 years to go.

I'm sure that "B" Fund helped out a lot.
Timber, yes it did. I use it to pay for hospital bills that are not covered like straightening teeth and such. I used most of it up while I worked but there is still some left. I also used part of it such as when I was out of work for 14 months to help with the mortgage and once when I was out with a broken leg for 7 months and out for 6 months with a rotator cuff and broken collar bone.I also use it for co pays for medicines. My wife has MS and her medicines are over $20,000 a year. I don't pay for it just the co pays which of course are much less. For some reason, those doctors don't like to work for free and they don't pay me when I was out. :tongue1:
I counted the days until I retired for about 30 years, my wife used to get mad at me when ever I mentioned it. Now I can't wait for two more years until I am 62 so I can collect social security and not work so hard.
I just have a good attitude and am basically a happy person, I can't apoligize for that. My wife loves to worry, one of us has to because I never do.
Maybe it's the Agent Orange  (come to think about it, I only made about $80.00 a week for the year I was in Viet Nam, kind of my own recession)
But yes, I do feel bad for people not as "lucky" as I have been.

Leoskee it was a joke but my daughter knows how I feel about buying American goods and I would let her park her car on my property.
I am a Veteran and have very strong feelings about America. Many of my friends and family of course drive foreign cars and I have absolutely no problem with that but for me, I can't.

You are truly a hardcore American if that is the case. But what about the fact that many of the things made in the US are made by people who are not American. Especially items made in factories. Then what?

Leoskee It was not my purpose to debate who makes what in America.
If the items are made by American Citizens then the taxes they pay stay here in America. If they are Illegal Americans then they have no right here and I think they should be deported but that is not up to me.
Many American people have no jobs because America went from a product manufacturing economy to a money management economy. Because we don't manufacture anything anymore so there is no money to manage.
I know a company like Toyota makes cars here which is great for the workers of Toyota, they have a job but all the profits from Toyota are sent to Japan. That money used to stay here. See all those foreign cars on the road? More than half the cars here were made some place else and as an American we have the choice to buy what we want, but all of those millions of cars were at one time built by tens of thousands of Americans who now have no job. I used to work for GM as a mechanic.
If I was still there, I am sure I would be out of work.
I live in NY and worked in Manhattan for 40 years. For as long as I could remember up until about 15 years ago, Manhattan used to be a manufacturing Mecca. The west side was all clothing manufacturers, then we had machinery factories, Singer Sewing Machines, electric motors, candy, Grummans, airplane parts, space shuttle parts. Steinway Piano's. There is absolutely no manufacturing going on in Manhattan now. Those thousands of jobs are now overseas. Of course we are all out of work.
They could make shoes in Mexico for practically free because the people can afford to work for a buck a day. I have been all through Mexico and you could live there on that but we can't. Have you ever been to the Phillipeans? They could also work for a few bucks a day so we can not compete.
We wake up here with help of our radio made in India, put on our energy saving flourescent light made in China, watch TV on our Japanese television, put on our clothes made in Sri Lanka, get in our Korean car and drive to the unemployment office and wonder why we don't have a job.
All of those products were once made here and it will not get any better. Now Japan has a standard of living better than ours and they can't afford to make their own products any more so they are going to countries I never heard of.
If we would have tried to buy more American goods and boycott companies that were shipped overseas we would probably pay more because as Americans, we make more but we would also have a job to pay for all that stuff.
All it takes is reading a label.
It is unfortunately too late now so I feel sorry for the thousands of out of work people here. I have been there many times.
I am a true American and I don't apolagize for that. I still stand and take off my hat when I hear the Star Spangled Banner, the Song "America the Beautiful" still brings a tear to my eye. I fly my flag every day, and Yes I am very proud to be an American.
Just yesterday I was driving past a Post Office, I noticed that the flag was ripped and the flagpole was going through the hole in it, I went inside and told the Post Master to change it as soon as he could. It's just me, I'm sorry
I have traveled to many countries in every continent (except Africa) and we as Americans still live better than almost everyone but it is changing fast.
I really do not have a problem if you buy foreign items. That is our right and I hope I diden't offend anyone with my Patrotism.
Have a great day and lets hope that all of the people here always have a job and that is better for our children.

Paul I did not know your wife had MS. Sorry to hear that. I have worked on a few MS drugs in clinical trials that seem to be very good and innovative treatments. They should hit the market in the next couple of years, fingers crossed. One of them is actually a pill instead of the usual I.V.

Dom I saw your name on a post and I thought you were going to jump on me.
I was going to deny your collecting privilages :tongue1:

My wife was diagnosed about 10 years ago but so far she is almost fine. She gives herself a shot of Copaxone every day. We pray that she stays the way she is. You would not notice anything wrong with her if you saw her. She has always exercized a lot and has always gone to the gym four times a week which may be helping. Even the neurologist is amazed she is still doing so well.
She woke up one day and couldn't walk. As you know with MS you never know which part of your body will fail and it happens immediately. You could wake up blind or deaf. She is very afraid and I do hope she stays the way she is. She just limps a little when she is tired and MS tires you out fast.
This is the reason I run a bicycle ride on the east end of Long Island for MS every year. I found the route, booked the hotel, got the permits etc and we contribute a substantial amount from the proceeds every year.
This year we are not doing it because so many people we know have cancer that we are doing cancer things.
Tomorrow I go into NYU hospital in the City. They have a floor for cancer children. This ward in NYU is for the worst cases of childrens cancer and almost all of them are there for experimental treatment because all other treatments failed.
I have been playing Santa Claus there for a few years and my wife's office donates hundreds of toys.
It is very heartbreaking and I have to be Jolly knowing that many of these kids are dying.
I try to find out something about the kid before I go in and I tell them things like "I saw your dog while I was flying over your home" Their eyes light up and they ask me all sorts of questions like what do I feed Rudolf.
Most of them are too weak to even take the toy or lift their head but almost all of them try to smile.
I am even having a hard time thinking about it now as I know what I will see tomorrow.
Seeing these kids, many of which are infants with their parents brings an entire new meaning to life and what we feel is important.
There is no job, no house, no single item as important as your kid.
My daughter who is 29 comes with us along with a bunch of people that try to figure what kid would like what.

Anyway, Dom, your collecting privilages are intact and thank you for asking about my wife.

What post are you talking about?

I worked on Copaxone too. The same company who makes copaxone has a couple of more drugs coming out. There is also a drug coming to market that treats the symptoms of MS as you described. It has shown to increase walking distances with less energy loss. Treatment gets better every day so I think your wife should be fine in the long run. I sponsor many MS walks and events. Breast Cancer is another one I sponsor alot.

I applaud your Santa Efforts with the sick children. That is something I don't think I could do. I agree children are the most important thing for anyone. Even us people who don't have any of our own :)

Dom, I meant this thread. I think I got a lot of people mad at me. I was just pointing out that a lot of items are cheaper and I got all up in my views on economy which I am not really good at.
I have been playing Santa for as long as I could remember. The suit was my Father n law's and it is older than I am.
I would love to get a new one as it is falling apart but a good one is about $500.00.
The beard alone is $200.00.
I also play for healthy Children as in this picture. I really get a kick out of answering the kids questions and listening to what they want for Christmas.
Did I mention, My Birthday is also on Christmas Day?

Paul,

I just joined a design company in the city. They have their own metal shop in the west side of the city, same space they have been in for the past 40 years. I don't know what half the machines do and to be honest they scare the crap out of me. I'll be learning how to use them and how to weld. We design and manufacture all kinds of lighting and make metal architectural pieces for buildings in the city.
We even fill orders coming in from Japan. I know we're one of the last companies in NY to be making stuff in the middle of the city. People like that and will pay for the knowledge their items are made right here :usa1:

I hope were not moving, I just got there.

I'll try to get some photos of the machinery, I think some of it is even older than you Paul :)

Good luck playing Santa, that sounds like a great thing to do, but very heart breaking at the same time.
