Dry Rock In a Sump

Hey guys.....So I ordered 100lbs of dry rock from reeflceaners on here and I was wondering.....once I receive it how should I go about it? I have a 120 gallon sump for my 210 and the plan is to just fill it with rock and mud. Can I just put the dry rock in the sump without it causing any ill affect on my system? shouldn't be a problem as long as it's dry(dead)..I would just give it a good rise in saltwater first or you'll get get all that loose debris in your sump

Dry rock can still contain dead organics which can start a cycle.

I'd cure it in a separate container before adding it to your system.

+1 you could start another cycle being that there is so much at once your putting in.

vinegar bath for sure. I added 100 lbs of marco rock a while back and had a hair algae bloom for like 3 months. Just use fresh rodi water with some vinegar to melt off the top layer of rock. Dry rock tends to have bound up phosphates.

Although I never had a problem adding dead rock, I guess better safe than sorry and cycle it. It probably depends on how much rock and total water volumn.

cycle it separately from you display tank. i ordered dry rock from them and started my tank with it.

i did experience a cycle of ammonia and nitrates nitrites

forgot to add that it was not crazy loaded with organics. it cycled quicker than expected. after first cycle was over i added raw shrimp to start another cycle. never had a nuisance or diatom bloom since i started

I have about 300-350 lbs of existing live rock and a good 4-5 inch sand bed if live sand. You guys think my system can handle it? I don't really have the space to let it cycle in a different container

I am adding dry marco rock that they say there rock has no stuff in it. I added it slowly over 3 week period so i would not get any spike

I agree with jarrett i did have some dry rock add a piece a week nothing changed but the the heat we had killed eveything lol so i still suck at life...

But anyways, I put it in my sump already and I was wondering if I have to put any established rock on top of it or if the bacteria will just grow in it since there's plenty of "live" stuff in my system

I would personally do it in 25 lbs at a time, so you dont get spikes, 25lbs every month just to be sure, why take a chance, you have a great looking tank
