Refugium Help

When making a refugium, how far off of the bottom of the tank should the Plexiglas dividers be, about how high.

If your talking of the bubble trap section 2 should be on the bottom with the middle being 1" off the tank floor.

if im using a single sump for protein skimmer and refug, should i put the pump in the middle to allow slower current through the refug and more to protein skimmer?

No matter which chamber you put the pump, the water will flow through the sump/fuge chambers at the same rate.

The 'Fuge section should and is usually separate from the skimmer section. The argument is the skimmer strips most of the organics out of the water so your feeding the fuge with real clean water. Slower flow through the fuge section unskimmed provides that section with the nutrient load that is beneficial to it. In mine I have 3 sections. tank drain/skimmer - Return - 'Fuge. The tanks drain is split with a ball valve on the fuge side to slow down the flow of water through it. The 'Fuge section drains into my return section. You can see my sump here:

when making just the refugium section you do not want any openings on the bottom, you want to contain as much water as you can in this section.

were you thinking of making a sump
1- skimmer section/fuge/return
or
2-skimmer section/return/fuge.

depending how you want to set up the sump will determine how the baffles go.
a couple of questions.
1-what size is your dt
2-what size is your sump
3-what kind of skimmer
4-what size pump are you using.

not necessarily, if i split my overflow and put refug on left and skimmer on right, and pump in mid and the overflow is split to the left and right with ball valves on each, i can make more run to the skimmer and less to the refug

Setting the tank drain to split the overflow into the skimmer section on one side and the fuge section on the opposite side, with the return pump in the center is a way to control the fuge flow.....contrary to my previous post.

yeah well im doin a 20 long, so its about 12 high and 30 long, how large should my fuge be? about, and how tall should i make it? like 10in?

what size pump are you using.

yeah i didn't buy either of them yet, im still looking for a deal, i know the return section is going to be a little bit bigger than my return pump. How much bigger should the section be for the skimmer be compared to the actual skimmer

i usually leave enough room to pull the skimmer in case of something. about 1 1 1/2"

The sump is usually built around the skimmer section requirements first. In mine I left an inch on each side. The return section is 10" wide so that I could run 2 reactors if I want, the rest was fuge.

This is my sump setup which should give you a starting point. Skimmer on the left, 'Fuge on the right and return/reactors /heater in the middle. This is a 40 Breeder.

their is really no formula for a fuge, but the bigger the better.
