What's the minimum tank size, and what other considerations are there in keeping one in a personal aquarium? (Not a large public aquarium.)

and should they be sold to the general public?

Thanks

Hi Brett

Oh boy. I saw the beginnings of this on the other forum...they can get up to 7', but most average 5'. A very large, round tank would be appropriate. Probably in the 12,000-25,000g range longterm. I would conservatively assume a 20-25' diameter for the shark to have any comfort. Though they are nocturnal, they will still be quite active at night.

Perhaps email Scott Michael or the Steinhart Aquarium (Thales would be a good contact if he is back from the Amazon).

Overall for the hobby, not a good animal to sell or even import. Only some of the Cat/Horn sharks are really appropriate for longterm captivity.

Here's a link to a paper regarding Steinhart keeping them and observing the birth of 4 pups: http://www.colszoo.org/internal/drum_cr ... 004SS2.pdf

Page 100.

It notes that the female was moved to a ~12,000g pool to give birth, so I'd assume the normal tank was much larger. There is also a contact email for one of the biologists there.

About 63,000 g. :D

Pam sits close enough to squirt me with a spray bottle every now and then, so you can PM or email me too if she doesn't respond.
