  1. questions about a new system

BCReefer If you do a search on Seaclone you will find many complaints. My advice is to mail order a CPR bakpak. This is also a hang on the back design. It's not a huge, hi-tech skimmer but it is sturdy, problem free, and will easily handle a 33 gallon. When you buy it, get also the surface...
  2. Noisy Iwaki pump

I had exactly the same problem. There are a couple of things you can do. First, don't restrict the input to any pump. That means no 3/4" line to a 1" input. It's in the directions, and for good reason - it's causing the pump to work harder than it should. Second, you have to stop the vibration...
  3. Clicking is freaking me out!

If you haven't lost anything it's just a pistol shrimp. They can be surprisingly small (like 3/4") and still be loud enough to hear several feet away - maybe that's why you haven't seen him.
  4. Mushrooms

Sure. As they proliferate they will become crowded, and some will let go of the rock. They then blow around in the currents until they can reattach.
  5. Found coldwater Amphipods on L.I.,N.Y.

My GF and I were out on Rockaway Beach when I decided to fill an old drinking water bottle with sand and water from the surf zone. Mostly I wanted to see how clean the water was (wouldn't that be a convenient source of water for changes). We were surprised to see perfectly ordinary looking...
  6. Lemonpeel & Coral Beauty...will they fight?

It's not a good idea. Dwarf angels are a smart and highly territorial fish, which will always mean stress, if you try to keep two in a medium size (50 -75 gallon) aquarium. [ August 13, 2001: Message edited by: Al Z ]
  7. Wave maker Questions

I think the Tsunami wavemaker is the best built. In the meantime, get two powerheads and set them so the outflows oppose each other - that might provide you with enough turbulence so that you don't need a wavemaker. Incidentally, many powerheads are not designed to work with a wavemaker...
  8. Anyone been to World Class Aquarium (LFS) in Brooklyn, NY...

They have a fair selection of fish and live rock, less so for invertebrates. What they are notable for is custom made aquaria, especially those with self contained filtration.
  9. how to put down a fish humanely ?

So, Ritterei, what it really comes down to is your tender sensibilities. How icky, messy and disheartening it can be to give an animal a quick, easy death. Why do that when it's so much cleaner and easier to let the animal suffocate in body waste, at the twist of a handle. Out of sight, out of...
  10. NEW TO HOBBY ICH - ICH - ICH "PLEASE ADVISE"

Skeeter1 I would think that there are people who do quarantine. It hasn't been neccessary for me because 1) I dip the fish for an hour in aquarium water treated with Seachem's Paraguard, and 2) the fish I have are all small, territorial types, pseudochromids, blennys, gobies, dragonets - fish...
  11. the new guy needs help.....

This hobby/obsession does not have to bankrupt you. Do it in steps, and take your time. I would start, before anything else, with a book. Ron Shimek's The Coral Reef Aquarium is a basic guide. It's up to date, brief but thorough, and available mail order, for not too much money. A 30 gallon...
