  1. culturing phytoplankton

I've done this before, too (including rotifers); my system was pretty much the same as above, and I got great results with it, too. Nothing difficult about it, only drawback is the time (not a lot, but frequent.) Be careful not to get rotifers in your microalgae culture!! --Jeff
  2. Starting a reef tank (soft corals)

mjk77, I agree with the others (that is, read first) but will also give you this piece of advice: ask three people and you will be told to do things five ways. There are a lot of ways to do things that work. Don't try to find the absolute best way; find a way you *understand* and are...
  3. brine shrimp hatchery

I guess I should have been more descriptive--I've hatched nauplii before. The selling feature of this hatchery is that it was an in-tank hatchery. Add eggs and water, hitch up an air pump and it will release the nauplii into your tank as they hatch. I like the idea of a gradual release of...
  4. brine shrimp hatchery

This may be a bit off topic, but it seemed to me that folks here would probably know a lot about about hatching brine shrimp. I saw this in-tank brine shrimp hatchery at my lfs. http://www.petdiscounters.com/aquarium/ ... tcher.html Seemed like a great idea, but I can't seem to find anyone...
  5. Rock supports

I don't have much experience with eggcrate, but it seems to me that it wouldn't be strong enough to support a couple layers of rock. It does sidestep the movement issue, though. Has anyone done this? --Jeff
  6. Rock supports

I used four inch lengths of 3/4" PVC, kind of like pilings. I drilled three 1/4" holes all the way through each piece (6 holes total). My reasoning for the holes was the same--to allow some movement of animals, nutrients, etc. I use three PVC pilings per rock to give three points of support...
  7. Please evaluate my plumbing ...

Thanks. I don't pretend I can design a good system, but I at least hope I learned a few things that don't work!
  8. Please evaluate my plumbing ...

I'm relatively new to plumbed systems; I don't know how much experience you have--maybe this is all obvious to you--but I wish somebody had told me these things. Anyway, here's the fruit of my V8 moments: How is water getting from your sump to the pump? This part of my system gave me a lot of...
