1. Which Camera?

Your current level of expertise shouldn't be a factor. What is more important is where you think you'll get or where you want to be. How serious of a photographer do you think you'll be? How keen are you? If you think you'll probably just get the camera out at family gatherings for snapshots...
2. Which Camera?

I love my D70, but then I already have a few good Nikkor lenses. If you are starting from scratch, ether Nikon or Canon are good. As Pedro says, the lenses and other accessories is where you can spend the money.
3. Coloring up SPS

Those that know me know how much I hate the terms "SPS" and "LPS". Partly because they are pretty meaningless, but mostly because of all the generalisations that are often present in sentences containing one or both terms. So called "SPS" are found over a wide range of depths, not just in...
4. G'day from Down Under

I grew up in Sydney, but now live in the Blue Mountains. The mountains are beautiful and I'm only an hour from my water collection spot and most of my Sydney dive sites.
5. cleaner wrasse

I currently have 4 cleaner wrasses (in different tanks) with a range of "ages": ~ 8 years ~ 6.5 years ~ 2 years ~ 11 months I recently lost another one that I'd had for over 7 years. I have never had one starve and have only lost them to silly things like jumping out of the tank. The main...
6. Pictillis not eating!!!

Have you tried newly hatched brine shrimp? The movement usually gets their interest up. I use this method for all my new fish - granted mine are usually very small - but even larger fish show an interest.
7. G'day from Down Under

Thanks for the welcome. Dead fish do go down the drain the other way down here.
8. G'day from Down Under

marrone just invited me to join and I thought I'd post and say G'day! I've spent enough time in Westchester over the years that I could almost be an honorary member. :smokin:
9. Inland Reef / Reefs.org Salt Analysis Project

Matt, I guess all I can say from here is to heed Sanjay's advice. Make sure that a marine chemist or two has looked over the study and validates the methods being used. I am a biologist and not a chemist, but I understand the importance of scientific method. To me it seems more important to...
10. Inland Reef / Reefs.org Salt Analysis Project

Are you saying that the ICPMS of the synthetic salts would show no carbon or oxygen? The value of seawater (ASW or NSW) to the organisms we keep is not so much the elements that are contained in the water, but the compounds. For example, carbon as an element is bascially useless, but when...
11. Inland Reef / Reefs.org Salt Analysis Project

Why are the samples being assayed dry? Wouldn't it be more appropriate to mix them up and then get the water assayed? How can they be sure that the samples are well mixes and all the various salts are in the right concentrations - which would also be a problem with mixing it, but it will...
12. Are these lobophorate or just polychaetes

Here was Dr Ron's reply:
quote:
The critters in question are hydroids. Crown of tentacles is not horseshoe shaped - there is only one Phoronid with a non-horseshoe shaped lophophore, Phoronis ovalis, and those tentacles...
13. Lectures and Quizzes, we are up to date

I had gotten behind on the quizes. I notice there are no quiz questions for Week 10 and 11, but there are answers for those weeks. The Answers for Week 9 appear to be "empty".
14. Are these lobophorate or just polychaetes

Until I read last week's lecture, I would have assumed that these were a "colony" of polychaetes. However, they seem to match some of the characteristics of Phoronida. While it is hard to be certain as they retract quickly, it does look like retraction occurs due to the worm moving back into...
15. Bonellid Echiuran from Sydney Harbour

I finally got the slides back from the night dive that Aaron and I did. Here is a bonellid echiuran: Metabonellia haswelli.
