  1. Your favorite tip or trick...

I took a baby's suction bulb (I think they use them to suck snot out of noses and are at all the drug stores) and cut down the end of it so I could fit in a piece of rigid airline tubing. This is great for spot feeding or blasting where a turkey baster is too big. You can also make it as long as...
  2. What's your routine before putting your hands in your tank?

I use disposable latex surgical gloves, mainly to protect me from contact with corals, worms, etc. I put a rubber band around my wrist to keep them from filling up with water . I found the shoulder length gloves interfered with my finger dexterity, and dripped too much water when I reached in...
  3. Converting wet/dry to refugium

You might want to raise the divider between the two sides or your refugium isn't going to be very deep. I just glued in a piece of acrylic (on the right side divider in your picture). Just make sure you still have enough space to hold the water that will drain down from the tank if the power stops.
  4. any good durso standpipe alternatives?

thanks wazzel, that looks like it would fit
  5. This is my plan to re-do my tank. Opinions?

I had a similar fish wipeout a few years ago in a FOWLR tank. I rinsed off the rock and let it sit outside for a month, then put it in my sump and used some in a reef tank. It has since been repopulated and saved me from having to buy as much new rock.
  6. any good durso standpipe alternatives?

I am replumbing a used aquarium and do not have room in the overflow box for 2 durso standpipes for the 2 overflow drains I'll be using. Is anyone aware of other designs to effectively quieten the drains that require less space? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  7. This is my plan to re-do my tank. Opinions?

why do you want to remove all the existing LR? Removing all the frags sounds like work, and they won't reap thge benefits of all the organisms you currently have in your rock. I've been able to cure new LR in 4 -5 weeks with aggresive sponge cleaning on arrival and then lots of circulation...
  8. R/O pressure

tony, thanks for the info - what make is the 8800 pump you suggest
  9. R/O pressure

Does anybody know/ have experience trying to increase the input pressure to a r/o unit? I recently had to change to a different faucet and the pressure (and speed of pure water output) is about half what it was. Could I increase the input pressure to the unit (spectrapure) with a pressure rated...
  10. bioload

I'm wondering if there's a formula for how many fish one can have in a reef tank. Should I just follow nitrate levels? Do the inverts, eg. shrimp, starfish, cukes and soft corals add to the bioload? I keep finding wonderful little reef safe fish that I'd love to add, but am afraid of...
