  1. Interesting info about some salt mixes

Tough to say really. We did not individually place 50 larvae into each dish for observation and count how many died. We basically took syringes and siphoned up a few drops of water and observed them using a microscope. I never got the impression that there were only a few to observe. There...
  2. Interesting info about some salt mixes

While I was doing my undergraduate biology degree at the Universty of Michigan, I took a developmental biology class where we raised sea urchins from egg and sperm. We used IO at that time, and an entire class of roughly 100 students was perfectly capable of raising the young. I also feel that...
  3. Minimum size needed for a profitable aquaculture facility?

My plan right now is to use natural sunlight in a greenhouse. The greenhouse won't be dedicated to being a coral farm, but I will have a section I can use for the time being. As for salt, I live in Ohio and have no access to natural salt water. I will have to make my own. Thank you all very...
  4. Lifereef skimmer problems

The most obvious thing would be the curing of the acrylic. Acrylic skimmers take a little while to shed off the oils and what not before they start to skim. I would give it a few weeks before freaking out. A brand new skimmer skims completely different than one that has been broken in.
  5. Want to open A LFS. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

D, I do not yet own a store, but I do know a little bit about writing a business plan. I am in an MBA program and taking a class on entrepreneurship this semester. There is a software package out there called Business Plan Pro. I have found it to be helpful in that it takes you step by step...
  6. Minimum size needed for a profitable aquaculture facility?

Hello all, I wanted your opinions on what is the smallest size required for a home based aquaculture business. I realize that the smaller the facility, the more difficult it is to turn a profit. I do not think it is realistic to aquaculture all the corals however, I would like to try and...

  8. Tang talk

MandarinFish, I have mine in a 60"l x 18"w x 28"h 120-gallon tank. There are only two fish in it(achilles tang and a flasher wrasse), and there is a lot of open rock work. If you want to see an old thread on RC about my tank, here's a link: http://www.reefcentral.com/vbulletin/sh ... of+my+tank
  9. Tang talk

I've had an achilles tang for about a year or so now. I try to keep my specific gravity at 1.025 which is about average for a reef. I am not sure that raising it beyond that is going to give any particular benefit. I have seen achilles tangs in the wild while snorkeling in Hawaii, so the...
  10. Does everyone quarantine everything?

TerryB, Yes, I read through all nine articles. Twice even to make sure I didn't miss what I was looking for which was a quantifiable identifier of stress in fish. I figured it was going to be nearly impossible to nail down, even if you were talking about a single species. Not sure I ever said...
  11. Does everyone quarantine everything?

TerryB, I was going to email you, but for some reason, my email is refusing to send stuff out without bouncing. Back to the original point. Thanks for posting a link to your article. I think it has some good practical knowledge, and extensive background information. Unfortunately, I see...
  12. Does everyone quarantine everything?

The web address works, but the link does not since there is a period at the end. If you type the address without the period, it's fine. TerryB, I'll email you about the problems I have with your paper.
  13. Does everyone quarantine everything?

JimM, I think I see your point of challenge...the "proven method" part. I am not really talking about an active "method" that you would do if you had ich. It is my contention that ich is a non-issue provided that you provide the following: 1. Clean water - the usual, generally accepted...
  14. Does everyone quarantine everything?

Are we talking about a hypothetical outbreak in the show tank?
  15. Does everyone quarantine everything?

Who cares about ich. If you cannot deal with ich in this day and age, you shouldn't have fish in your tank at all. Just give up now. There are so many proven methods of dealing with it that I am constantly amazed how experienced aquarists fear it like the boogy man. I would be more likely to...
