  1. Tang compatibility

The Purple and the Yellow are likely to fight due to similar shape. I had a Yellow and Powder Blue in my 125 and the Yellow (which was in first) harassed the PB a fair amount. The Hippo may be ok as long as its smaller or a lot larger. If its similar in size, there may be issues. Not sure...
  2. # of fish??? Help!

Trying to suggest how many more fish is difficult because many factors can affect this number. Some things to consider: - How large will the fish get? - How territorial is the fish? - How compatible is the fish with the other inhabitants? - How much swimming room does the fish require? - Does...
  3. Need Help - DSB safe "janitors" ....

For the DSB, I would recommend Nassarius and Cerith Snails (maybe 10-20 each). I would also recommend 2 Fighting Conchs (they each require 2 sq ft of open sand). The combination of the 2 will help aerate your sandbed properly (only the top layers) and won't eat any of the pods or worms. I've...
  4. Hermit Crabs versus Snails In a Reef tank

When I first started (June 2002), I got a few dwarf hermit crabs. They have since moved up to some small Turbo snail shells - about the size of a nickel. They have killed off a few snails but don't seem to bother anything lately. If you do get hermits, I would keep it to a few. Expect a few...
  5. The best aiptasia defense... or offense

Plastering them with a high concentration of kalk does the trick whenever they appear (which is rare to begin with). Heard the use of peppermint shrimp are hit or miss and not reliable as a solution.
  6. Algae Control, Valonia?

I used to have the occasional valonia but my 2 emerald crabs seem to be taking care of them. Its helpful to pull them out yourself as well - never had any problems with them bursting either.
  7. Are there any safe shrimp that wont eat pods and bugs?

I've got a couple of Fire Shrimp (cleaners) in my 125 and they don't seem to be eating the pods. If they are, its not apparent and this is with me feeding maybe once a week right now. My tank is devoid of fish right now (in QT due to ich outbreak) and the pod and worm population has exploded. I...
  8. What turns over your sand?

My Nassarius snails and Fighting Conchs help keep my DSB aerated.
  9. Any dwarf angels safe with soft corals?

Dwarf angels seem to be hit or miss with corals. I don't believe there is one definitive species that hasn't been known to nip on corals. Many folks have had dwarfs without incident (including myself) whereas others with the same species, killed off some of the corals.
  10. Things that eat cyanobacteria

Wolfman, Its a 125 tank with 7 fish, 2 shrimp, 2 crabs, 6 hermit crabs, 30 strombus snails, 2 turbo snails, 2 tiger trochus snails, 12 nassarius snails, serpent star, soft corals and LPS. I use an AquaC EV-120 skimmer and use RO water for top off and water changes.
  11. Things that eat cyanobacteria

I export caulerpa every few weeks, do a 10% water change every 3 weeks, and skim 24/7. I've got about 10x circulation right now but may add another powerhead to give it a 2x boost.
  12. Things that eat cyanobacteria

toddius, I've got a couple of fighting conchs myself and they don't seem to do much, if any, to the cyano.
  13. Why would RO/Di water with 0 TDS taste funny?

I've heard several times from folks that run RO/Di units that they turn off the DI part when they want drinking water because of how it makes it taste.
  14. Things that eat cyanobacteria

I've got some cyano and wanted to get some critters that would eat it. I'm doing other things to combat it as well but wanted some additional help. I've heard that cerith snails and scarlet reef hermits would eat the stuff. Anyone have experience with these to confirm this. Also, when I look...
  15. Cleaning? Fire Shrimp

I know the fire shrimp tend to hide unless there are more than one which is why I got 2. They had just finished eating when the fish started lining up so maybe they were full already and didn't feel like cleaning at the time. I'll see if they change their behaviour tonight before I feed them.
