  1. Free coral covered in hair algea

Take it all and buy some crabs and snails to clean it up! You can conquer hair algae, and if you can get free rock, do it. You could also take the corals and quarantine those with some herbivores, and put the rest of the rock into the dark for a couple of weeks until the hair algae dies off...
  2. Floris Reef Tank

Actually, once it's set up, the kids really do a good job maintaining it if they're old enough. You'd be surprised how much kids can accomplish when they're really interested in it. They have deciphered the information that is included in the test kits and have a better understanding at times...
  3. Floris Reef Tank

It's been awhile, but I posted some more pictures on the Floris Reef Tank thread in the build off. Check them out and let me know what you think. The tank is doing pretty good, but it's still recovering from the summer away from school.
  4. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

Hey Adrienne, I definitely would be interested in those frags. Also, PM me your information, I'd still like to do a tax letter for you from your previous donations. Dave
  5. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

Added some more pictures today. Unfortunately, some of the donations that were made suffered from RTN. I'll try and get some photos of the planktonic shrimp and post them or perhaps pop them under the microscope.
  6. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

Posted some new photographs. Some are simply updates on things in the tank that have been taken before, but there are some really neat photos taken with my digital microscope. Check them out!
  7. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

Added some more pictures taken by one of my students. He even found some zooanthids (I think?) that I hadn't seen before and managed to get a good shot of them.
  8. Cutting an Eclipse hood

I went to the dark side for a few months before I went back to school for my masters in education. I was a prosecutor for 5 years and then in private practice for 6 months stirring things up. I agree with you on the smaller eclipse hoods. They are pretty useless except as a cover. I would...
  9. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

I had looked over your threads at the pictures, and the eyes really make it stand out. I'll keep my eye out, however, to see if there is anyone in there like a cirolanid isopod. The problem with hunting them is that I'm not here at night....
  10. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

How much/long would you suggest I do this for? I don't add B-Ionic every day, it is more or less when one of my students remembers as they often forget to write it down and when they don't, I don't add any since I might not know if I am adding too much. Therefore, when I add it, should I add...
  11. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

That's good. They are out all of the time, day and night.
  12. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

I can try and do that type of trap. Also, I am keeping a watchful eye on the tank and the isopods. I would like to find something that will eat them, so I'm looking into different types of fish that might. In any case, I'm hoping that it doesn't hurt anything as they're crawling around my...
  13. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

Might be the way to go, but I don't have a trap that I can put a live fish in and not have it swim out (without skewering it) and I also don't have a live fish to use!
  14. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

Well, good news! Even though I was inclined to agree with your assessment based on the article you referenced, Dr. Ron said that it was a sphaeromatid isopod and is harmless. In the interests of diversifying the tank, I'm adding it to the tank today. Still on the hunt for the crab...
  15. Floris Reef Tank nano build-off project

I did in fact read the article after seeing a reference to it before. I will be very cautious now about allowing kids to stick in their hands. So much for having a tank with a lot of activity from fish! I hope it's not a cirulanid! In any case, they may or may not be present in my school...
