I have a fugu puffer in my reef tank for 1.5 years. I feed him only pellet food and he is like any other fish in my tank. Every once in a blue moon, I find a hermit half eaten which I assume to be the puffer. Not much of a problem.
I did the same with my Pro w/ Mag3. I'm sure it cuts down a little on the efficiency because the organics concentrate on the surface film. But with good water flow turning the water, you will not notice a difference. Plus the tank looks a lot better with the pump hidden.
