  1. Green Hair Algae

I recently had a green hair algae problem that was caused by (you guessed it....my laziness) I got tired of going to the LFS to get RO fresh water, so I started using tap water. Seemed to be fine for a while, but then green algae started taking over. My solution? Back to the RO, got a good...
  2. Cleaner Shrimp have disappeared!

My cleaner shrimp (2 of them) molt fairly regularly, and they are out and about the next day--that is, they generally molt at night, and I see the shell floating in the tank and the shrimp are out and about that same day. I have a 55 gal. tank, with about 100lbs of LR which means there are LOTS...
  3. bubble coral question

I would try to find a better spot for it. I recently purchased a bubble online, and it came out about 2-3 hours after I added it to the tank. It's been doing great ever since. Good luck! Greg
  4. Tired of scraping algea from your tank?

So you're saying the foam pad is just garbage and I should not use it at all? This is my first reef tank, and that's what the LFS recommended. The LFS is pretty reputable, and the foam isn't expensive anyway so I don't think they were trying to pull one on me. When I rinse my foam pad out...
  5. red slime algae

See my recent post titled "Tired of scraping algea from your tank?" Basically, if you use a foam pad for any part of your filter process, you need to make sure you clean that puppy regularly. Greg
  6. Tired of scraping algea from your tank?

I just rinse it out in the sink using hot water, then ring it out before putting it back. Probably not "technically correct" to use hot tap water, but I'm not that paranoid. Works for me.
  7. Tired of scraping algea from your tank?

I thought I would pass this along, since I haven't seen anything about this and didn't see it covered in the archives. Anyway, I've had my tank for 3+ years now, and I used to scrape the algea buildup from the tank about every 2-3 weeks. After doing this, my tank would look very sweet, but...
  8. Increasing specific gravity

I've had my 50 gallon reef tank for over 3 years now, and my specific gravity has slowly sunk to about 1.021. I'd like to get it back up, and was planning to do the following: Each time I add water that has evaporated off (about 2.5 gallons every 10 days) I will add salt water instead of fresh...
  9. Replacing VHO's?

Thanks to all for the responses. I guess that makes is pretty clear (no pun intended ) Greg
  10. Replacing VHO's?

My LFS tells me that it's generally a good idea to replace VHO bulbs once a year, since their effectiveness wears out over time. Is there any truth to this? It just feels a bit weird to me throwing away a bulb that appears to be working quite well. I have a 50g reef tank that's about 3 years...
