  1. Should I rip out my full-size overflow...?

If you want to make the overflow walls thicker without ripping it out, why don't you just laminate anothe layer of acrylic on the inside or outside? You could even stop it short of the teeth so you don't have to cut matching teeth.
  2. blue/green chromis question

I too have experienced the slow whittling down in numbers. Started with 8 and am down to 4 in about 3 months. Mine don't spend any time in the rockwork. Always above, in front, behind.
  3. 2 day shipping for corals

Do you think a leather coral survive 2 day shipping? Colorado to Michigan, if it matters. It seems to me that after initial drop-off, why should the season matter much? The coral will be in a heated warehouse, truck, etc, right up until delivery. Has anyone shipped any other corals 2 day...
  4. Another one bites the dust, reefers that is...

I'm sorry to hear of your problems. :( It sounds like you're getting a good diagnosis on the problem, though, and now you're more informed going forward. Running without a skimmer hurt you twice. First, the skimmer removes organics that the algae/dino's might use for a food source. Second...
  5. White dots on tip of dorsal fin: not ick

It does not appear to be sand. Fish is in a BB tank. They also seem too small to be isopods, and have no signs of any appendages. To be honest, it looks like an ich spot at the very tip of the fin, but it doesn't fall off or spread.
  6. White dots on tip of dorsal fin: not ick

My clownfish has been in QT for 2 weeks now. It developed lympho about 1 week ago, a small round spot on the side of its mouth. It just dropped off yesterday. He has has 3 white dots on the tip of his dorsal fin. The dots are the first, last, and middle spine, at the very end. No other...
  7. how to clean corline algae off old tank and pumps?

If it's old, dead coralline, it should scrape off easily. I know because I just set up my tank after it was dry for 6 months. The old coralline just flakes away. What I didn't get was quickly eaten by my mexican turbos. They even got the coralline that grew on my silicone. Beauty.
  8. Yellow Tang Anomaly

That looks like a bacterial infection. Red splotches on tangs are running rampant right now, mine included. It can be brought on by poor water quality, although your stats look fine. Water change, and antibiotics are the recommended treatment (maracyn 2, nitrofuran, or kanacyn). Check out...

  10. Metal Halides for a 220g tank

I think most people will suggest 1 light for every 2 feet of length of the tank. Thus a 72 inch tank uses 3 MH's. For a 30 inch tank, even with a DSB of 4-6 inches, you'll probably want either 250W or 400W, depending on what corals you want to keep. I've got a 30 inch tall tank, and chose...
  11. every fish i get seems to die from ich within a week

IMO, there are only two treatments for ick, copper or hyposalinity. Copper is tricky, and the therapeutic dose is rather close to the lethal dose for most fish. If you do decide to use copper, only do it in a QT, because it will kill all invertebrates. Keep in mind that the tank will be...
  12. HOT TIP Submissions -- Topic: Skimmer Tips

Aqua-C most models: If you submerge the output pipe in your sump, make sure you add an airhole. This will then allow you to keep a constant water level in the skimmer, regardless of the water level in the sump (assumes skimmer is somewhat elevated). One way to do the airhole is like a durso...
  13. 400 watts through my arm, how dangerous?

Current through the body is really more significant than voltage. The voltage that you receive is only used to overcome the resistance of your flesh/blood/bones, etc. If the voltage isn't high enough to overcome this resistance, no current will flow through you. The bodies resistance is...
  14. How much does copper stress fish?

How much does copper stress fish? I've got a 6 line wrasse who has been in my QT for a week now. I don't see it eating, but it is plump with a roundish belly. It seems to be active and swims normally. No unusual behaviour or any visible indication of illness. I want to give it 2-3 weeks of...
  15. taking apart a Sea Swirl

Send an email to the manufacturer. I think the service guy (owner?) is named Bob, and he's very helpful. He told me how to do it.
