Mine did get quieter. Not by a huge amount but after a month or so the difference was noticeable. Once a biofilm (slime) develops on the inside of the skimmer it has a dampening effect. You can still hear it for sure but I think the sound dropped by around 20-30%.

Thanks, even a guess at a genus would be helpful at this point. I have been target feeding it with phytoplankton and rotifers twice a day. It looks better than when I bought it. More of the polyps have opened up.
